Something that (very hopefully) will never be repeated in human history (but I won't hold my breath on it). Something the likes of other real-world supervillains like Hitler, Stalin and Kim Jong Ill haven't managed to do (quite possibly combined). Dear manletLeader made life miserable for millions of his own people, and Chairman Mao for billions of his own citizens. Stalin killed millions beyond his borders and Hitler inflicted systematic pain, suffering and death through dozens and dozens of nations and even entire human races though either direct conquest or in forcing the Allied nations into a several years-long showdown throwing hundreds of thousands of lives into the proverbial meatgrinder to see who comes out alive. But even then there were many nations and people who remained isolated from the conflict and the death and destruction wrought to proclaim who would determine the new world order.
But I have to hand it to Osama Bin Laden and the 9/11 hijackers - using very little in the way of resources no less, they've managed to make existence more miserable and suck that much more for nearly every single living being on the whole goddamn planet. For many, perhaps even most people, it's something that's barely felt, but it's felt nonetheless. For a whole lot of people, it's a more palpable pain and suffering. It didn't even have to be direct physical harm - the economic collapse that pretty much dragged the whole world with it was at least partially compounded by the "blood and treasure," as they say, lostinvested into the War on Terror. People who may very well have been perfectly reasonable individuals with some different circumstances now feel inclined to harm their fellow man and woman by joining the ISIS/ISIL terrorist state, and they've persecuted and murdered thousands if not tens of thousands of their fellow Muslims. The tensions since 9/11 have only sent Israeli-Palestinian relations backwards - much backwards in fact, and in many parts of the world Islamic relations have taken massive steps backwards, some due to fear and misunderstanding, others because of the bizarre and incomprehensible belief that good can be accomplished by sacrificing your own life and killing yourself in order to kill others. And of course there's the over 3,000 souls lost directly on 9/11.
This isn't something I say or even think very often, and it's a sentiment I reserve for very special cases - but if justice is truly a metaphysical concept that extends beyond just what us highly imperfect mere mortals can arbitrarily assign and inact through our own laws upon man, then by all rights of that justice should Osama Bin Laden and the 9/11 hijackers be suffering eternal damnation and the greatest pain and torture any sentient mind or force can conceive through the ability of imagination.

It absolutely was. Authorities now go apeshit over folks taking pictures of bridges and trains...my comment is really? You think that a group of knuckleheads, lead by a bearded crackpot living in a cave, that was able to pull off a operation that involved the simultaneous hijacking of four airliners (which the hijackers first needed to learn to fly)...that a group like that needs PHOTOS of your bridge or railroad to successfully attack it? Please. Just shut up and stop trying to 'look like you're doing something'...
That attack turned the western world into a bunch of simpering wimps afraid of our shadows...so in the sense that it turned our lives on its collective ears it was extremely successful. From an strategic/operational perspective it was astonishingly successful.
