I think we need an Overland sub blog.

Kind of a bridge blog that covers Automotive based overlanding as well as camping as thats basically what overland is; vehicle based camping in remote areas.

I know I'm getting pretty heavy into it. I know Hammerhead is as well. I believe there area handful of others on Oppo, as well as a few lurkers I am sure. So what say ye?

You know, I thought long and hard about starting and running one but I came to the conclusion that the tags are the best way to do it. Sub blogs usually get a lot of great attention at the start but unless you have a very compelling subject and a decent user base they tent to fall flat. I like to use my "TWBV" (The World By Vehicle) tag and I know VicariousILive uses "Overlanding" so there are some good starts. Frankly, and im not trying to discourage you, I think you generally get more traction and more eyes here on oppo than you ever would on a sub blog. If sub blogs had more tools for interaction (pm's, stickies, etc) I would have done it by now. But as it stands I don't see the benefit.

True but there are bits that are more overland, less oppo specific like gear reviews, packing ideas, and the like. I just dont want to clog up oppo with my review of some sleeping bag or the performance of some on-board battery backup.

I really REALLY want a tent like that some day. If I ever have any kind of 4WD Vehicle it will be getting a fold out roof-tent + ladder :D

I thought about that, but considering the crap I clog up oppo with....I don't people will mind. I like the idea generally, but I'm worried that the 10-12 active Overlanders that would contribute wouldn't be quite enough to sustain momentum. Again, not trying to discourage you from doing it, just sharing my train of thought that I had when this popped into my mind. I think I did a poll around that time and I found there were less than 10 regulars that would be interested.

Lol, how retarded would it be to mount a tent I already have to a weather proof board of some sort with hinge and mount it to a roof rack? Personally I feel like it's totally possible, but I may be overlooking something. (Essentially the board would sandwich the tent when it's folded shut).

Or... Or. maybe it could help generate more information and buzz towards the, ummm.... sport (?) [yes yes I know, its an outdoor activity]. But this is also why I asked about it on the Oppo first, to see if 1) there is any/enough interest to get one started and b) if not, if oppo minds me clogging the preverbial drain with reviews of jackets and percolators and wetherproof matches (rain: they lit. wind:they lit...)

I think a good start would be to just start doing it, create a tag or we could work together to codify some tags to use and built the momentum up to the point we either make oppo sick of us, get rolled into Truck Yeah or we have enough users and interest to sub blog. Thoughts?

The tent poles is what you're missing. I mean theoretically you could make it work so you lust fold it out and then install the poles, but the roof top tents like those in the pic are essentially fold open and done.

Ill be getting a Tepui. The Kluman sky or something like that. The one with the removable roof panels so you can see the sky at night. My boss just ordered his (I convinced him he needed it) and it should be in end of the month. Ill be sure to give his a full look around on quality before I decide to buy.

I mean either way, I'm the kind of guy who's gotten pretty good at diving head first into the shallow end and still figuring out how to swim... I say we just create the sub, share on Oppo to create momnetum, email Collins like demuro used to do to Hardibro for shares and see where we end up...

Man alive I did my list the other day and its depressing. I want a winch which means front bumper $$$, winch $$, Dual Batteries $$, new front spring to correct the drop from the extra 150-200 lbs $$, Then there is a roof rack $$, Fridge $$$, Rear bumper with swingout $$$$, fix the seats $, add more power (electrical), Scangauge...etc, etc.

I did find someone who would build be a custom steel rack for $700 with feet, thats pretty good.

Exactly, I mean you would need to pack compact scaffolding just to put the tent up.

I know I know. But some of it is complimentary. I mean, I would feel a lot safer with a winch, but it requires a bumper and probably a 2nd battery...which means strong front springs. Its killer.
