And here's a funny picture for the people that don't want to click through and read about my life.
But my jaw started hurting yesterday and it was strange, it kinda just was stiff and hurt a bit to close it all the way on one side, but I just kinda kept ignoring it. And now halfway through the day today I started to get a sore throat and I feel like I have a serious head cold, although there is no coughing and I can breathe through my nose fine. I'm starting to think it's wisdom teeth related(I haven't gotten mine out and I'm 22) and I'm really not wanting to have to deal with that right now, but this is getting a bit ridiculous. I was just trying to knock out some homework and realized I was actually having trouble focusing because of it, although the jaw discomfort has subsided in the last few hours. Long story short, BAHH! I don't have time for this shit right now, just started yet another job, and have school all the time, and moved almost 2 hours away from home and any sense of being able to drop what I'm doing to go do all that. Oh yeah, and I freaking hate dentists. Maybe I'll hold out until after tomorrow and see if the rest still just feels like a cold or if I still think it might be those annoying fuckers. Anyone want to share their experience with wisdom teeth being bitches? I know better than to go on WebMD so I'm just gonna ask Oppo, that's better right?

I got my wisdom teeth out before I started having issues so I can't say what it would have felt like if I had waited. They were impacted and had to be surgically removed.
How is your bite? Do you have an overbite, underbite or crossbite?

Its definitely a possibility. If it is wisdom teeth try a topical analgesic. Clove oil is a little known but usually pretty effective option, your local pharmacy should have it (try and independent before a chain!) Good Luck!

I'm no expert, but in case it's a really strange case of TMJ (basically a strained jaw joint), avoid chewing gum or anything chewing-intensive like tough candies. You can ease the pain by taking ibuprofen (brand name is Advil) OR (NEVER BOTH TOGETHER) naproxen sodium (brand name is Aleve). These are anti inflammatory pain killers and will be much more effective than acetominophen (brand name Tylenol). Avoid aspirin all together. It's just not a very healthy pain killer.

Reminds me of when I had trismis. One day I couldn't open my mouth very much, got worse, went to the doctor, apparently it was nothing, then we found my braces wire pierced in to my cheek. Went down to the doctor again and recommended us to go to the oral surgeon. Well they thought my issue was muscular and put me through the most painful procedure ever. Basically, drug me and force open my mouth. I was still conscious. I don't know how I didn't cry. Never again. Best part? It got worse where even drinking was difficult.
Went to the ER, got a CT scan and it was a ridiculously big infection that pushed against my esophagus (Made swallowing hurt a lot). Was not a fun 2 nights in the hospital. Just think, it could always be worse! And that's not the whole story either. Also, I didn't have wisdom teeth!

That sounds horrid. I'm kinda almost leaning towards this maybe being a bad sinus infection.

Well, I don't chew gum, so I have that going for me.
And I actually can't remember the last time I've taken a pain killer... don't think I've ever even taken aspirin... and there's none in the house so I guess it'll wait until tomorrow. I have class/meetings all day tomorrow but I'm going to try and make an appointment for friday if I can. Thanks for the info on the different painkillers!

Thanks for the tip, I'm actually leaning towards it being a sinus infection(read: hoping), I remember having one as a kid that was kind of like this now that I think about it.

I have a slight underbite, always have, had braces for like 6 years. The weird thing was that it just didn't want to close all the way to begin with, which I've never had happen before. I was thinking about it and I seem to remember having a sinus infection when I was a lot younger come on like this so I'm gonna hope it's that and make an appointment for Friday.

Horrid would describe that well. I hate sinus infections, I've had some bad ones myself. Hope you feel better soon! I would just rest if you don't have much work to do. That can help a lot.

I feel like at least once a year I get hit with a pretty bad one... I've been using a new product at work and doing a lot of sanding, maybe something different in it got to me quick and kicked it off(I always wear a 3M mask and it's outdoors with breeze when sanding but you never know).

I dont know about most people, but I have all of my wisdom teeth and they are constantly shifting, They shift the most at night though. Makes my jaw hurt.

I have a slight crossbite. It was mostly repaired with braces. Before getting the braces the teeth on one half of my mouth were not closing right and had a slight underbite. I was having jaw pains before getting the braces but now it's fine.
Hopefully it's just a sinus infection and not caused by your bite.
If it is caused by the bite one thing that might help is wearing a mouth guard when you sleep. If your bite is even slightly off and you grind your teeth in your sleep then it can cause jaw pain.

Very interesting, I actually only have 3 wisdom teeth, and one has actually come in and didn't cause any issues, I can't remember if I have both on the side that's hurting or not.

My mom has had that grinding problem all her life and I've always been kind of afraid of that. Since it seems to be progressing pretty steadily into my sinuses and throat I'm gonna try to sleep and grab some painkillers in the morning.

I have 3 out of 4 in, the 4th one is the only one that has caused issues. I have a giant head, 26cm in circumference. So that helps with my wisdom teeth, I have room!

As a side note, Tylenol can be taken with Aleve or Advil or aspirin, but you cannot take Aleve, Advil, or Aspirin together. Tylenol is considered fairly ineffective compared to Aleve or Advil but generally works well for headaches. It has been proven ineffective for back and neck pain compared to a placebo. Never take more than the maximum safe dosage listed on your painkillers' bottles. If you aren't getting enough relief, taking more won't help, and instead you'll be putting yourself at risk for stomach ulcers and digestive inflammation (in the case of Advil, Aleve, or aspirin) or liver damage (in the case of Tylenol). Don't take Advil, Aleve, or aspirin with or within 5-6ish hours of drinking alcohol as they are hard on the stomach and digestive lining (they're technically mild acids, especially aspirin) and can cause digestive inflammation (very unpleasant) or ulcers (very painful and sometimes dangerous). Don't take Tylenol with or within 5-6ish hours of drinking more than a small amount of alcohol (one beer or a glass of wine is fine as long as you don't do it frequently). Tylenol is hard on the liver, as is alcohol.
Source(s): Numerous doctors.
I like to tell people this stuff because it seems most people have no clue, and they could better treat themselves if they knew this stuff. Tell your friends (no seriously, spread the word. The more people well informed on over the counter pain meds the better for everyone).
Anyway, I hope you feel better. It's no fun being in pain and feeling ill, especially not when it's added on top of the stress of a new job and lots of schoolwork. It's possible that the ill I-think-I-have-a-cold feeling you're experiencing is simply a manifestation of a lot of stress caused by starting your new job (seriously, that's a thing - stress is pretty complex actually). Never the less, if it gets worse you'll know it isn't just stress.

Get it done sooner than later. It will only hurt more and more and distract you so bad at work you may get fired. Until you actually get them out
this is you're best friend. It says to only take 400mg but any doctor or dentist will prescribe you 800mg of motrin which is the same thing.

A good sign that it's sinus related is if the pain worsens when you bend over. Do you have any swelling on that side? If so, I would recommend trying to get to a dentist immediately.

No swelling, and the jaw discomfort seems to be subsiding a bit, but that could also just be the other stuff hurting more and downing it out. haha
