Went to look at an apartment today with the Mrs. For $1600, we could get 1bed/1.5bath. That's fucking ridiculous, even if the place was in the middle of Fair Lakes. Not worth it. So now we found a townhouse in Manassas that we both love. We're gonna try to buy it.

I love the less developed regions of the state. 700 for 3 bedrooms/2 baths.

I wish we could move back out to Winchester. But then me and her would both have an hour+ commute.

Yeah. I owned property before I moved here. The hour and fifteen minute commute to work killed it for me though. I hope y'all find something nice.

Thanks buddy. Yeah that's how we came to Manassas. That seems to be the right balance between convenience and price.

We'd found a 2 bed (2nd bed was more an office)/1 bath in Shirlington for 1650 years ago; when lease came up we decided to buy in North Springfield. This was basically at the bottom of the market here (early '12) so we lucked out, but MAN it's tough trying to find a place around here. Best of luck to y'all.

Good luck. When I saw rents creeping toward $2,000 I packed my shit up and ran. I kind of enjoy talking to people now where pay schedule never enters the conversation.

I would really love to get out of this place. I'm not from here so it's all ridiculous to me anyway.

Yeah, that was my old hood, up the hill from Shirlington, in Fairlington. The Arlington half of Fairlington, mind you, not the Alexandria part. Apparently that's important. The splintering of Arlington and surrounding communities always cracked me up. (In fact I have a relative who refers to Springfield as "Southern Virginia" because this is how people are completely out of touch with their community and how they need to mentally exclude everything they don't understand as "another part of the state.")
Yeah, man, I was born, grew up in DC, but upon arriving again where I started and knowing the place as if for the first time, I decided to drive my ship to new lands.

Yet it's a whole other country with affordable real estate, regular folk. Had some friends who were big fans of Front Royal, but I think they had graduated Christendom and colleges are kinda magnetic like that.

Front Royal was on our possible list. Wouldn't have been so bad for the wife, but it would have been a hike to Sterling for me.

I grew up here but am waiting for the right place/opportunity to move on (here for at least a few more years w/obligations). I lived at the bottom of the hill (by the 7-11), so I know what you mean about the 'split'. It's hilarious.
Where we are is really more Annandale than Springfield, but it's about a mile to either 395 or 495, so logistically it works as well as anywhere else for us.

I used to kick my longboard down the hill to that 7-Eleven 'cause those S-turns down to the bottom were pretty chill. One night, with people apparently still in blind furor/'Merica/Colors Don't Run mode, I was wearing a camouflage sweatshirt and buying beer or donuts or whatever there and this drunk frat boy starts yelling about "what are you wearing, that's disrespectful to those fighting for our country, etc." at which point my buddy is like "are we going to fight over a
sweatshirt
, bro? Go play some Call of Duty."
Whenever I felt like I hadn't risked my life in a while, I'd ride my bicycle down that way, then climb Walter Reed, tour around, then speed back down the hill. Best part of that hood though: Carlyle Grand's fried grits with shrimp and ham. That place was a gem.

Hell yeah re: the Carlyle grits. Still occasionally take the pup to the park down there on lazy Sundays and pick up a Willing NoHam at Best Buns before. So good.
