Very cool walk through. Is it bad that I knew this might be the car for sale at Bentley Gold Coast before they even said that?

I think I know the location and price for every red and yellow 16M in the country right now. That blue one I showed you had a sale pending when I called the dealer about it.

Haha. Not at all. It just means that you're staying on top of what's available so that you don't have to do as much research once you can afford it.

That's dedication for sure. If it's the TDF blue one I'm think of then I'm surprised it hasn't sold already. It's beautiful.

It's easy to stay on top of them because there are so few for sale at any given moment. And I wouldn't be surprised if there are less and less of them for sale soon. The 458 Speciale Spider is going to be so expensive that I think it will help the 16M maintain its value. The 16M never dipped under $200K and the Scuds seem to be going up in value right now.

It was the TDF blue one, in Salt Lake City. I should check to see if it ended up selling or not as it was at least a month ago when I talked to the dealer. Going to their website now...

Have they confirmed a 458 Speciale Spider yet and, if so, will it be limited production like the 16M?

I've heard Scud prices are rising again as well. I'd be interested to know the reasoning.

That's what I thought.

That blue one is gone. Darn.

From what I've read the 458SS is confirmed. 458 units.

http://www.autoblog.com/2014/08/18/fer…

Supposedly some long time clients got to see it already. Criteria for being able to order one is already having a 458S.

I think the Scud is going up in value for these reasons:

1. It's still a relative "bargain". You can get a very low mileage one for under $200K. And I saw a sub 500 mile example for sale in TX recently for $230K. It was basically a time capsule for less that what it was new.

2. While it's not as rare as the 16M it's still somewhat rare. Approx ~2000 made worldwide. Ferrari did not release the numbers but there have been people who have created online VIN registries to try to estimate the numbers. There are probably around 1000 or less cars in the US. So the investors are snapping them up.

3. The 458 Coupe is the more refined and capable car. But the Scud is more raw and you can get a low mileage Scud for less than a low mileage 458 Coupe. I've read a lot of comparisons by people who have driven or owned both. You can get a faster lap time in the 458 because it's easier to drive fast. But some people like that the Scud is harder to drive and more likely to oversteer you into a tree if you make a mistake. It demands more attention. The standard 458 Coupe was made in really high numbers so it's going to lose value for a long time before it potentially gains value.

Interesting, I didn't know that. However, it's definitely not surprising.

I've heard similar arguments. For instance, some people (I know one in particular) feel that the 458 is a bit too tame and sanitized and not as raw and hard edged as the Scud. In fact, even though it's slower than the dual clutch unit in the 458, they actually prefer the Scud's F1 system because it's a more "emotional" shift and they feel like you actually feel the shift happen.

Personally, I think both are great vehicles but, if forced to choose, I'd probably take the Scud because I prefer the way it looks and sounds.

Yeah I think it all depends on the needs of the driver. If you can afford to DD a Ferrari and want to do so then the 458 is a great car. You can go coupe or spider based on your preference. And it doesn't matter that it was produced in high numbers as you're gonna put a lot of miles on a DD and that kills the investment value anyways. If it's going to be a weekend/investment car like I'm after then a Scud or 16M makes more sense. I don't need a Ferrari to be civilized since it would be a weekend car.

I had heard that the Scud actually has faster shift times despite not being dual clutch. I did a quick web search and found:

The Scud supposedly achieves a 60 MS shift time (per Edmunds).

The standard 458 is 100 MS (per Autoguide)

458 Speciale: I can't find the shift time. It's supposed to be the fastest

Good assessment.

Interesting. I wouldn't know. At this point, most supercars shift so quickly that I can barely tell the difference. The biggest differences that I notice are the quality of the shift.

This is from Motor Trend:

"The seven-speed F1 dual-clutch got a new control logic resulting in 20 percent quicker upshifts and 40 percent quicker downshifts."

What's funny is that the "bad" thing about the single clutch units is what makes them good (at least to some people). The Scud/16M's F1 is fast and brutal. The DCT version of the F1 is more smooth. I prefer brutal because it's more fun. It makes you feel like you're driving a race car.

I've seen the first video but not the second. Watching the second now!

Have you seen Chris Harris's review of the Scud?

Geez that noise never gets old.

It's great to see old automotive videos. It's incredible to see how much they've changed.

These were the best:
