The Winchester lever-action is quite possibly one of the most famous guns in the history of guns. Known as one of the guns that won the west, it has appeared in probably every cowboy/western movie, tv show, book and radio show. The 1894 was designed by John Browning in, well, erm, 1894. It has also been used as an automotive cliché by every journalist ever when describing a good transmission. So, how good is it?
( Full discloser: Winchester wanted me to shoot this gun so badly that they made it well over 20 years ago and I bought it years later for a lot less.)
Turns out, very. Very, very, extraordinarily good. It looks as good as it shoots. John Browning did good on this one.
The gun is small enough that it is easily packed around and can be moved from target to target quickly, yet it's weighted enough that it stays on target. The weight distribution is more forward as on expects from a rifle, but my particular 94 doesn't shoot a rifle round...
Remember this picture? Well, here is the answer to what made those big holes. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Yes, this one shoots .44 magnum. So, it's got some kick to it, but if you keep the but of the stock in your shoulder, it's really not that bad.
On to the pièce de résistance, the lever-action. The lever action just feels so natural and smooth to operate. Lever goes down, lever goes up. Spent rounds go out, fresh rounds go in. It is simple, yet elegant. No, your Civic's transmission does not feel like a Winchester, so please, shut the fuck up, Car & Driver.

Is this for Ohio's new Deer laws or do you just shoot for fun?

I would like to own a Winchester some day, however right now I'm looking at hunting rifles. Possibly semi-auto if I want to have a hunting/sport shooting rifle but I'll have to see what tickles my fancy.

I got it many, many years ago. I shoot for fun, but I would like to do some boar hunting with this.

Ok, I was asking because Ohio finally legalized rifles for deer season this year. Has to be a straight wall cartridge though.

I'm sort of saving up for a Marlin in .45. I prefer the Marlin action, as it's multiple stages that glide smoothly and mechanically into one another. I also prefer the bolt and ejector design. Winchesters always seem to have a sort of last stage *pop* as you close the handle, which lets you know the bolt is locked, sure, but I don't care for the feel of it.

When I lived in the US, I did a lot of deer hunting with a '94 chambered in 30-30. Most inaccurate gun I have ever owned
True story.
I'm in a tree stand and a buck walks out maybe 75 meters away. I aim...I fire...nothing. Deer is still standing there. I aim...I fire a second time...nothing. Deer is still standing there. Eating fucking grass. Looking at me.
Four more times I fire that gun, which I should point out, was "guaranteed to shoot eight inch groups out of the box at 100 meters," only to have the deer look at me with a glare of confidence.
That's when I stood up in the tree stand and grabbed the barrel with both hands and Frisbee chucked the empty rifle directly at that smug deer's head.
Of course, I only threw the gun about 70 feet, but you should have seen that deer snort, jump, twist, and then run off in panic.
You see, obviously that particular deer knew it was more dangerous to have a Winchester Model '94 thrown at him from 75 meters than actually shot at him.
And that's a true story.
