While automatic transmissions may be the inferior choice in most applications, that doesn't make them bad, or say anything about a person that has one, other than the specific vehicle that they are referring to or driving, doesn't have a clutch pedal. AT's are valuable tech which specifically helped move American (and global) car culture forward. Without them we would live in a very different world.
Also, remember that there are many, many people who, for a variety of legitimate reasons, cannot drive a manual.
As a personal choice, if I can help it, I won't ever buy another AT for my personal vehicle for the rest of my life, but with the exception of my brother (he's my younger brother, and therefore this is my responsibility) and my children (see rationale for younger brother, apply it to offspring), I will not judge anyone else for their transmission choice.

I love my MT but I would sell it if i got a job in Boston and had to commute in that shittastic traffic.

The only thing that bothers me is when people say "Well it's an automatic, but you can shift the gears with the lever or these paddles, so it's manual too! Best of both worlds!"
I hate those people.

Are they talking about a true DCT? Because if so, they have a point. If not... well, it's nice to have a bit more control (and is great with engine braking).

That's something that they would say.

I've been driving manuals in Los Angeles for nearly 10 years. It's NOT that annoying while in traffic. Stop being a pussy. If anything it's easier because you can just set the hand brake and rest both your feet.

Experience with rentals and my brothers V6 AT Mustang. My Beetle has a 5MT.

Also, what makes a DCT with paddles more engaging than an Automatic with paddles?

When done correctly (hello Porsche, nice to see you), It's essentially a manual with a different application setup which allows you to keep both hands on the wheel.
Most ATs with paddles have a lot of overrides and responsiveness issues. DCTs typically do not.

I still say manuals are safer.

This was the argument I presented to my brother when he bought his 2013 V6 Mustang, that specifically in edge case scenarios, that extra degree of control could be the difference. He acknowledged this, but bought an auto anyway.

Honestly I didn't mean the edge cases, I mean that when driving a manual, you just have to be aware of everything all the time. It requires more attention than driving an auto, and that makes it inherently safer.

It is the internet. The internet must have something to hate. I tend to ignore the discussion, because there isn't really anything new being said. I've got MT in the cars and AT in the truck. No big deal either way. My overriding thought...

Having driven a manual for many many years, I can inattentively drive one if I wanted to. =P

But it's still in principle, the same thing. It's not like the DCT has a clutch you need to step on.

I'll let Jeff Zwart handle this one, specifically referencing the PDK system in better, racier, Porsche's.

Some cars just need automatics though.

What's cool about my Suburban is that it's got an automatic transmission, but you can shift it into 'M' and then use the +/- button on the column to switch gears!
It's the best of both worlds!

OMG IT'S EXACTLY THE SAME AS A MANUAL

I tried using it once. Besides being completely awkward it was the opposite of silky smooth operation. I thought... uh, maybe for towing?
Anyway I had a friend who said his first car from 1981 or so (maybe an OG Starion?) had paddle shifters. I couldn't help but think he was seeing the distant past with F1-colored goggles.

GC, while technically you are right that it is a manual, you know in your heart it isn't.

For performance purposes, it's better than a manual. And that is a VERY tough pill to swallow.
Still sticking with my promise to try to continue to only buy three pedaled vehicles.

You're 100% correct. I've accepted it, but it's still not a 'manual' in my definition. Doesn't mean it's not technically a manual, just not as defined by myself. Webster's actually defines a PDK as a manual more so than an manual transmission - operated or controlled with the hands or by a person
