They're probably afraid it'll lock it's accelerator to the floor and drive off at random

Let the other automakers build the first-gen systems that crash. Good idea.

If there is a company that I DO want to make autonomous cars it's Toyota and Honda. Why? They make all the boring appliance cars that people who don't care about driving buy: i.e. the perfect autonomous car buyers. Let's be honest, autonomous cars are going to be safer and maybe even reduce traffic to a degree, let's get them into the hands of the people who would benefit from them

I hear that argument and I don't GENERALLY disagree, but I specifically disagree in the sense that even bad drivers are better sensor suites than the best current technology has to offer.

Yeah I'm going to disagree 100% on that one. List of advantages of robots over human drivers:
1. Don't Text and Drive
2. Don't Talk and Drive
3. Don't fall asleep
4. Don't get drunk
5. Don't have blindspots
6. Immediate reaction time
7. Don't gawk at accidents and pulled over motorists
8. Don't get roadrage
And on and on and on. I'd trust the google car over the random shmo in the car next to me anyday.

1. yes
2. yes
3. yes(ish) they can freeze
4. duh
5. No, they CERTAINLY have blind spots. Its a matter of how much information can you process, 360 view is NOT on the menu yet
6. Immediate? no. Fast? yes. Faster than an alert human? debatable.
7. Gets confused by accidents and pulled over motorists, hands controls back to driver to "deal with it"
8. They don't get road smarts either, They don't know the difference in what should be done by the book and whats the safest smartest and most correct course of action.
I agree with Toyota, The average person is a WAY better sensor package than anything currently available.

Which is why you develop a better system, that's what R&D is for. Are autonomous cars ready RIGHT FUCKING NOW? Of course not, but they could be ready soon. And for the largest automaker in the world (Or did GM take over again? I forget) to stay away from the biggest automotive evolution in the history of automobiles is insane. I don't trust other motorists as far as I can throw them, I can't wait for autonomous cars.

I really do hear the arguments your making, but I still agree with Toyota.

Okay. We disagree on the internet, I don't understand your arguments at all but it really doesn't matter. This will come back to bite Toyota in the ass in a major major way.

I don't see how it will. Toyota can and will adapt quickly to this technology they've investigated when and if the time is right. Will they be ground breakers? no, but they rarely are and seem to be doing quite fine with that.
