Not anymore!

Kinja'd!!!

It appears this poor dude blew a turbo. Although not actually on fire, it created enough smoke that firetrucks showed up. It just sat there blazing smoke non stop. Traffic came to a stop the smoke was so thick people couldnt see.

Was it a runaway?

i believe so. No way dude let it just sit there and run on purpose. First time Ive seen one in real life. It was pretty glorious.

No doubt. Diesel run aways are the most ridiculous, scary, awesome thing in the world.

I once had a run away on a 2 stroke jetski engine, we managed to save it by covering up the air intakes. But holy shit was that scary.

That is the only way to stop it.

Damn, yea, sitting out on the water stranded is already bad enough. Let alone a smoke stack roaring out. I would pee a little in my drawers. This dude had the hood up obviously, but I guess he could get to the intake to choke it off.

Try this scenario:

There is a 20+ litre displacement diesel engine running at well above it's rated RPM while being fed by a turbo (or turbos) the size of your chest that are also spinning out of control and the fuel won't shut off...

Do you:

A) like the bad-ass you are, calmly disassemble the air cleaner housing so you can put your shoe/mattress/chunk of plywood you ripped off the wall of your trailer with your bare hands/door of your truck you took off with your trusty Swiss army knife over the intake to choke the life out of this raging multi-cylinder monster; which might grind to a halt from overheating on it's own, or possibly explode like ten sticks of dynamite were installed in the oil sump, at the very least covering you with a spew of boiling oil and coolant, or possibly riddling your body with cast iron shrapnel from the block, and shards of piston and turbo travelling at the speed of a high-power rifle bullet...

or...

B) Open the hood, take a good look at the situation, fail to find the manual fuel shutoff (because hot, loud and scary), mutter "fuck this!" to yourself, stand well back and dial 911.

I know I'm a B man.

holy shit! That happened in real life i take it? What was this on? Some sort of huge generator or a ship?

That's how you'd stop a diesel, but good luck with that.

no, didn't happen; just theorizing. the only diesels in my life are generators, and they are BIG, but they also have convenient, clearly marked, accessible (with a key) manual fuel shutoff valves.

LOL. Pretty vivid theorizing there! Good job!

We had the jetski out of the water, doing some work on it. I've never had an in-the-water runaway.

A runaway diesel engine in a semi or generator is a whole 'nother story. That air intake would be a whole lot scarier as would the size, sound and heat.

Lol yeah, no thanks. jetski <1 liter, truck >8 liter? Scary dude...

I was told to put a 1/4" thick piece of steel (at least) over the turbo inlet if that happened.
