After I saw this photo on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I decided to write this concerning a recent development.
My two brothers and I have officially decided that we are going to buy an old Volvo wagon off of Craigslist and tune the crap out of it.
Since a good number of your Oppos are obsessed with and/or owned tuned Swedish longbacks, we though we'd ask you where to start. Are engine swaps worth it?
What about gracing the roof with a long solar panel and using electric racing motors for increased acceleration?
My brother wants to bag it. I want to put lowering springs on it.
Please help us design the ideal tuned Volvo wagon. Please, name specific years, tuning parts, wheels, colors, powerplants, lights, anything.
This is gonna be epic.

If you don't put a turbo I5 from an 850 in it, you fail.

I fully support doing a modern Volvo swap into an older Volvo. It would actually be a unique swap. I can't say I've seen one done like that.
So, Volvo 240 Wagon with Turbo I5 from an 850, tasteful lowering that is not slammed, and stock exterior trim, with stock seats/doors/carpeting, with the dash from the donor 850. Something just like this:
Stripe is necessary.
Now, if you found a V70R, just rebuild the motor, and if it's not a manual already, do a manual swap and you're done. Paint it that fantastic blue/white livery, and call it a day.

First off, it's a dream of mine to do a proper redblock build and it will definitely happen one day, if you really want me to I'll list off everything I would do to one, I was actually about 2 hours away from putting in the order to do it to mine a few months back when I managed to very nearly destroy a piston and head in my Volvo. I would definitely say going with a build redblock would be wayyyy cooler than any swap you can find.

Don't go to craigslist. A lot of the volvos there are over priced and in a pretty sad state to begin with. Head over to turbobricks or grassroots motorsports . They get good classifieds listings plus a lot of the work has been done. If you go over to turbobricks they kinda hate anything after from the 850 on. They mainly like the 240/740/940. Grassroots motorsports classifieds has the weirdest yet most tempting deals sometimes.
Personally I'm of the mind stick with the redblock or swap for an LS or a 5.0.
If you want to know how to tune the turbo or swap for a V8 turbobricks should have you covered. I love those guys because they consider the shop manual casual reading and care more about maintenance than horsepower. They're nuts.

Everything you could possibly ever want to know you'll find over at turbobricks.com
Assuming you're talking about getting a 240 you have a few options for more power:
Turbo Redbrick: Easiest and cheapest option, should get you over 200hp without much effort or higher if you want.
DOHC Redbrick: Harder to find, but not outrageously expensive. I used to have a 242 with one of these, it was fun. Probably around 165 hp
Turbo DOHC Redbrick: Capable of crazy power. The previous owner of my 242 had a turbo DOHC 245 making over 400HP that he daily drives.
V8 Swap: I think SBFs are popular swaps, I know someone with a 5.0 swapped 740 sedan
Again turbobricks.com will have more information that you could ever go through.

Start with a 745 or (probably even cheaper) a 945. No hipster price-penalty like the 240s carry. They're pretty friggin' similar under the bodywork.
How about a non-standard engine swap like a straight 6 from a BMW instead of the fairly common SBC or Ford 5.0?

I agree with the other post about the turbo I-5 from an 850. Best swap going, and you can get a running 850T for $500. Or a B6304 from a 960 will fit as well. 210 horses out of the box on the 3.0l, porsche designed engine. Sounds glorious
