Be honest now, are Maserati cars truly unreliable and bad as their stereotype says? I know jack about these cars and I've never cared about them until I saw one(possibly owned by a foreign exchange student) yesterday. They look alright I guess, not really that interesting. So tell me about this brand Oppo? Is this stereotype true?

I know someone who owned a Gran Turismo and got rid of it because of the constant maintenance. However, he wants another one soon. I guess the pros outweigh the cons in his mind.

It has a Ferrari V8. (I think)
Do with that what you can.
Also, you think the 911 looks good, but the Gran Turismo is just alright?
Wut.

One of my neighbors had a blacked out Gran Turismo for exactly one year. Traded it in for a blacked out A8L W12.
He couldn't stand how often it required maintenance, but he did love the car.

Doesn't matter. Have you HEARD a gran turismo? Just in case you haven't, I had to go listen myself:

Ehh, I can't say much about the Gran Turismo, but I am very unimpressed with the Quattroporte and Ghibli. For the amount you'd be paying for either one of those cars, there are interior bits that are so cheap, they'd seem at home in an Aveo. Hard plastics and the like. I wouldn't say I'm a huge snob about that kind of thing, but I will admit I was a bit put off by seeing that in a Maserati... As a whole, I don't think they are bad cars but they aren't really great.

Pretty much. He doesn't have to worry about the actual cost of maintenance, though. His father is having their Rolls Royce Phantom's hood plated with gold flake this week. They roll like that.

I think there's one guy round these parts who does own a previous gen. Gran Turismo. Matt Farrah (Smoking Tire dude) also used to own a Quattroporte. I can't remember who it is off the top of my head. I'll do some digging and see what I can find!

Well, they don't make supercars (not really before or since the MC12) or hypercars. So theres that. I don't really know how to rank them amongst sports car makers either, because as it stands currently, they're more of a luxury-sports car company. The GT is the only thing that could be considered a sports car, but the other 2/3rds of their current lineup is luxury cars. To me, right now, having a Maserati is more of a status symbol than a statement that says "I want a good sports car" or even "I want one of the best luxury cars". The Gran Turismo just isn't that amazing when you compare it to other things in the price range in the sports car segment. Like I said, not bad, but not amazing. Sorry I couldn't really rank them or place them in a comparison, (all of this is subjective and opinionated anyway), but I wouldn't convert your enthusiasm for Porsche into enthusiasm for Maserati.
Someone around here has a Gran Turismo, hopefully he doesn't see this and hate me or something, but he could probably give you a better idea about maintenence and that stuff.

I wouldn't say the 911 is particularly bland, it has a definitely unique shape and aesthetic characteristics. The Maserati just doesn't have anything that makes it uniquely a Maserati, if that makes sense.

I don't know about this maintenance wizardry you speak of.
The cars aren't unreliable, just like everything else, you have to take care of them. Most Maserati owners aren't buying them for much other than the name, so the constant maintenance is so someone can at least check the oil and tires, because most owners wouldn't know how to do either.
I have a client who owns a red and black Gran Tourismo, and another client who owns a 2004 Spyder. I haven't heard of much in the way of major work to either of these. The Spyder had some work done to the convertible top last year, but it was bought pre-owned, and had no issues other than the top just last year. Neither of them have mentioned needing excessive maintenance, or anything close to another client I have with a 300SL Roadster (1962 I think).
They're absolutely wonderful to drive, and the Gran Tourismo does have a very pleasing exhaust note .
In a recent conversation I heard about Mercedes, many service centers will nickel and dime people over brakes. Every time a car goes in, it "needs brakes." Apparently that's just a thing. It's always a couple hundred dollars. There's a not so local Mercedes shop that I've been told about that is no longer associated with a dealer, but the owner will often get cars in for second opinions on warranty work. He'll hear stories from clients about how the cars always needed this, or always needed that when they go in for service, and part of why he stopped being associated with a dealer is because of those cases. He wasn't around to screw the customer over. Sure, someone buying a Mercedes can afford to do brakes twice a year, but in most cases, you don't need to. He wasn't going to screw over customers to make a quick buck, and in return, he gets many repeat customers for work on their cars because he is an incredibly honest guy that absolutely knows his shit about Mercedes cars.
So in short, you just need to know a little bit about your car, and you'll know that even a Maserati doesn't need to be serviced any more than a Mustang. You just need to take care of it well, that's all.

My mechanical engineer cousin has a 2004 Maserati Coupé. It sounds glorious. The manual is not bad at all. Most of his costs have been brakes and tires. He sadly refuses to let me take some time to hoon it, but this may be why he's maintained it so successfully. I'm sure I'd kill more tires. I think the people who have extra maintenance issues may be folks with automatics/paddle shifts.
