A nice tribute to Lee Behel, who died qualifying in his one-of-a-kind SBC-powered race plane at the Reno Air Races:

terrible thing. I just wrote a piece about that plane, posted here, and now it's gone. The designer is good and has a long history of solid aircraft. Its a shame this happened.

Would love to read your piece on the GP5. Lee and I were just talking about it two weeks ago, and what an adventure it was putting it all together.

I didn't know the guy, but when we lose such a poignant person in the aviation community, it really hits home. I mourn the loss with you.

Aircraft engines tend to be more reliable because they're typically run at a constant RPM well below the redline. That might be their thinking, but racing an aircraft puts many of the same stresses on an engine as racing a car does and I definitely would not want to put my life in the hands of a Jag V12 at 200 ft AGL and 500+ mph.
I feel kind of like a turd for having said that now.

That goes without saying, but the statement reads like I'm inviting disaster.
