I just used basic algebra to figure out how large of a double walled fort I can make in Castle Clash with the pieces of wall I have at my disposal.
14 units square on the outside and 12 units on the inside.

Clash of Clans doesn't work on my phone. I used to estimate rebar and concrete so I used tons of math then.

I worked at Kinko's for 10 years during and after grad school, and used algebra all the time when people would ask, "How much to I have to enlarge/reduce this to make it the size I want?" And as a dad helping his kids do homework, I use it all the time....

My daughter has just entered middle school I'll imagine I'll use my math skills more in the coming months helping her. I've noticed that my brain doesn't math the same way other people do. For basic arithmetic I do a lot of rounding and process it in weird orders.
I doesn't help that her teacher wanted her to do some damn charts to figure them out.

You touch on my biggest complaint about MS math (and grade school math, for that matter). My son (also just starting MS) brings home math worksheets that are simple to do, but for the life of me I can't figure out how the teacher wants him to do them.
"Johnny made 10 trays of cookies and used 8 cups of flour. How much flour was used for one tray?" Simple: 8/10 which reduces to 4/5 C.
Done, right? No, we have to make a "fraction model" or some other stupid chart to show how we got the answer. Now, I understand that some kids need more help figuring these things out, and if they need a fraction model to get the concept, fine. But if my son can do the straight math, why does he have to bother with a model?? Hell, I couldn't even figure out how to do my 3rd graders' homework last night. I got the concept, but I couldn't figure out how the teacher wanted them to present their answer.
