Hello fellow Opponauts,

I'm looking to get some owner input regarding the reliability of 2011+ WRXs, hatch or sedan. My Focus ST has been plagued by steering issues from almost day 1, and I am looking at a few other vehicles to replace it.

One of those vehicles is a 2011+ WRX. I'm a sales rep by trade, and will probably average around 25,000 miles per year, so reliabilty is a great concern to me. I don't plan on modding the vehicle at all outside of snow tires and maybe some performance wheels and tires for the summer. I'm hoping to pick up a WRX with less than 30,000 on the odometer in the next few months.

My question to any WRX owners out there—how has the reliability been? I've heard differing things regarding the transmission and engine reliability—namely the ringland failure issue. Though I feel that issue is a bit overblown, I'm curious to hear what owners experiences have been.

Can any 2011+ WRX owners shed some light on their experience?

Thanks all!

2014 w/ 8600 miles. The only issue I had was the fuel float stopped sending info so it looked like I was on empty even though I wasn't. This happened the secon day I had the car and it was replaced the next day.

2010 WRX owner (same as the '11-14, except on the narrow body chassis), I had to replace the clutch at 45k miles (entirely my fault from multiple autocross seasons), and a few weeks ago I had to replace the engine (new short block) because of rod knock at 72k miles.

Over the course of under 1k miles and about 3 weeks I went through enough oil to cause starvation and develope a knock (no glaring cause but the oil filter may have developed a leak).

The EJ engine has some reliability issues and there is significant debate on if it is better to tune or not. The WRX will get 3-5 mpg fewer than your Ford did, it will rattle, and it will be a ton of fun.

With the high residual values and likely abuse of a used example, a 2015 wrx is probably a better choice. The warranty alone is worth the extra $4k, add in the better chassis, and increased fuel economy and the new car is the way to go.

I picked up a 2011 Limited Hatch the other day that just got off lease so I had all the previous work done on the vehile (34k). The only issues the vehicle had was a loose connector from the shitty aftermarket security system the origional dealer put on the car and a loose valve stem on one of the wheels. One thing that I would suggest is purchasing a grimmspeed master cylinder brace. This generation of 2.5i/WRX/STi are known to have cracks in the firewall bracing and some haven't been able to get Subaru to warrantee it.

GET IT!! Mine has been an absolute blast in the last few weeks I've owned it. I can keep on by buddies 2011 Charger R/T Maxx thats had some pretty significant power mods done to it. You wont be sorry!

Thanks for your honest opinion. Some people are such fanboys that you never get a straight answer on how their owner experience has been.

I have considered the 2015 as well. Unfortunately, it's tough to get one under $30K on a dealer lot right now, and I will never order a vehicle from the factory again after the debacle ordering my ST. I might sit tight for a bit and just see what ends up on the lots in the middle of winter. $30K is a tad higher than I want to spend, but you are right in that WRX's tend to be very abused as used cars.

The '11's still sell for $20k+, order a base 2015 for the $26-$27k and in 5 yrs sell it to some sucker for $20k.

Say, interested in a slightly modified, constantly autocrossed 2010 with a new short block for $18.5k delivered with my fancy parts and some of the stock ones in the trunk (only kidding if you aren't interested).

I want the widebody. :)

If yours was a 2011 I might have been interested, lol. Though, I think that may then make me the sucker.

2013 WRX hatch, here. No real mods. 15000 mostly city miles, with a couple road trips, and literally no maintenance problems at all. It's squeaked a little since new, but otherwise I'm really pleased with it.

The interior is much worse than Ford, and the fit and finish is, too. Mileage is pretty crappy, also. I usually get 19 in town, and 27 on road trips.

With all that said, it's much more spacious than the Focus, and at least as fun. It's a very different car, but really good.
