Outside of trucks, I'd choose a gas engine over diesel any day. There I said it.

Depends on the circumstance. for a commuter I would take diesel all day, but for something fun, gas.

I hate the smell and sound of diesel engines.

Personally, I just can't stand the sound.

See, I'm the direct opposite. I grew up with multiple big diesel trucks in our driveway and I just love the smell of burned diesel in the morning. Loud pipes save lives, y'all.

Personally I'm partial to either. I'm looking to buy a W124 in the next year or so, and I had almost discounted diesels as being too slow and noisy but then I read what some modern owners are getting out of it in terms of gas mileage: up to 40 mpg highway and 30 city.
Also the air intake vents on the diesel are awesome:

My dad was a big block Chevy man. We had big trucks with loud pipes but they ran on the proper dino juice.

Modern diesels are quiet comparatively.

I think the worst part is when they are running on waste oil and you are stuck behind them on an empty stomach and the smell of french fries comes into your car. I don't think I could own one that runs on vegetable oil because it would always make me hungry when i drive.

I guess it's all in what you grew up with. At least, in part.

Me too, that being said I still like the W123 Wagon. Just with a gas engine

They sound beautiful and smell wonderful... Except Fords, they smell like shit.

Yeah, I honestly don't see why Jalops like diesels.
They're much heavier engines so most of your cars (front-engine) become heavier in the worst area. They also rev like shit and there is pretty much no point of revving a diesel...it's slow all throughout the rev-range and has too much inertia. I want an engine that happily revs through to its redline and pulls harder as the revs get higher.

It's not the volume, it's the grumbling sound itself.

Turn the radio up. That how I make all my unwanted noises go away. Squeaks, rattles, screaming pedestrians clinging onto the side of the vehicle for dear life... Radio up and all the unwanted sounds are gone.
