Didn't get to look long, but this is what my residence hall owns that I am I charge of updating, fixing, and turning into a working race kart. Soon I need to get keys to the shop, and try to get this thing running.

what school is this? the college I'm going to next year (University of Idaho) has nothing like this.

Purdue

Is the steering wheel upside down?

Purdue Grand Prix, I presume?
![]() 09/08/2014 at 22:19 |

That's how Karts are.
![]() 09/08/2014 at 22:20 |

Yes
![]() 09/08/2014 at 22:20 |

Really?
![]() 09/08/2014 at 22:21 |

Yeah, after learning about the GP last year I'm a little upset that I turned down Purdue all those years ago.

Whats the reasoning why? Easier to see over?
![]() 09/08/2014 at 22:22 |

What engine does it have?
![]() 09/08/2014 at 22:25 |
|
Yes
![]() 09/08/2014 at 22:25 |
|
Probably that and aero
![]() 09/08/2014 at 22:32 |

I think it has a Yamaha KT-100S engine. If it works I'm not sure. I don't know why, but the kart retired after 8 laps in 2012 and hasn't run since.

Does it have expansion chamber exhaust?
![]() 09/08/2014 at 22:39 |

I don't know what that means. I didn't even get to look at the engine. I had 10 seconds to take a pic and get out. Karts are all new to me, I know nothing.

So Karting people, does anything preclude me from building a kart chassis in aluminum sheet and extrusion a la Elise?
![]() 09/08/2014 at 22:46 |
|
From a structural standpoint it should be doable with the right alloy, and welds/rivets. Then again I'm basing this off building FRC robots out of 5052 aluminum and not kart knowledge.
![]() 09/08/2014 at 22:52 |

Very nice, looks like that could be sorted pretty quickly actually. Even if you have to rebuild the motor or something.

have you seen YSI there? im pretty sure he goes there too!
![]() 09/08/2014 at 22:55 |
|
Oh, I have the tech, I wonder about the rules. Our extrusions are 6061 and our brakes can bend 3003. We *can* bend 5052, but it usually develops surface cracks and that's not cool. I don't have a way to heat treat to avoid the cracks.
![]() 09/08/2014 at 22:58 |

What thickness were you thinking about using, the frames for our robots were either 1/16" or 3/32". This is to build a 150 lb robot capable of 20 ft/s.

Not met YSI, but I've met another Opponaut.
![]() 09/08/2014 at 22:59 |

I was worried when I saw the 8 laps then retired status that it crashed and damaged the frame or something.
![]() 09/08/2014 at 23:03 |

What you call 1/16 we call .063 and we can bend that in any alloy, really. The 3/32 is actually .080 and we can bend it in 3003, but 5052 is when we really get the cracks. I think if I had a beaded edge to the brake (not a sharp toe on the edge) we could bend thicker alloy, but that's a whole new piece of kit. That or bend it hot, but I don't have a furnace.

The .08 was probably overkill for what we used it for, the plans is to go down to .063 for this season. We also chose to rivet the frame together to not deal with warping by trying to weld it. The reality is you should be be able to make sufficient frame out of 6061 extrusion, especially if you if you can weld and gusset and make a tub out of extrusion that doesn't have to carry nearly so much load.

I think you're right. I may experiment on this before I use the same technique on a camper trailer I have in my skull.
![]() 09/08/2014 at 23:13 |

The main thing I learned about welding aluminum is .125 wall tubing is so much more forgiving to weld than .063 wall tubing from a warping standpoint.

Welding 090 wall shapes is not the end of the world. Welding aluminum in general sucks. That's why the epoxy-rivet is so appealing.

If you could get me an exhaust pic I could tell you.

Finally dug up some pictures of the robot frame and the torsion catapult that mounted on top of it. This "launched" a 45 cm yoga ball about about 7 meters through the air at a target 3 meters off the ground.
All the sheet metal work was done on with a laser cutter and CNC brake. The frame was three pieces and riveted together. Yes is the team number as part of the lightening pattern.

If you want any extra help with it let me know, I didn't think I had enough time my freshman year to join Owen's kart team and seriously regret not giving it a shot :|
![]() 09/08/2014 at 23:44 |

I'll always take help. Also, sometime we're doing an oppo meet up.
![]() 09/08/2014 at 23:45 |

You know karts pretty well don't you... I don't have a key to the garage yet.
![]() 09/08/2014 at 23:50 |
|
No, I know small engines very well.
![]() 09/08/2014 at 23:51 |

Sadly I can't hot rod it. The engine has to maintain completely stock internals and stuff.
![]() 09/08/2014 at 23:53 |

WTF? Isn't racing won in the garage as much as the track?
![]() 09/08/2014 at 23:57 |

That's what I'm saying! I'll find loop holes
![]() 09/08/2014 at 23:58 |

Cool! Keep me posted on both fronts, a meetup sounds like an awesome idea. Any idea when it might be? IIRC the Purdue car club does call-out shows early in both semesters, maybe we could meet at one of those?
![]() 09/09/2014 at 00:00 |

Good. Because you are going to slap an Oppo sticker on that bitch and win!

I want the Jalopnik bump! Think Hardibro will send me a sticker?
![]() 09/09/2014 at 00:03 |

Maybe. That would be awesome.

Ah, yeah frame damage would be a problem. If there's no frame damage though, it shouldn't be too bad. Worst case engine swap is needed, probably.
