I have to say, the thing is pretty cool. I live on the other side of the house, upstairs. Used to be if I wanted to change the temperature, I would have to take a trip not too unlike that of the one's the hobbits took to Mordor. Now I can change it from my cell phone! God I love technology. Still trying to figure out how to make its display red and give it a sentient AI though. Baby steps.

So, using the app is like if Gandalf just had the GIANT FUCKING EAGLES just drop the ring into the volcano in the first place?

Frankly I think it's a waste of money.

Well fellow Alex, $250, though supposedly it's suppose to save you money with having a programmable thermostat. Though I guess we'll see if that's true or if it's just marketing BS. Also if you're worried about the difficulty of installing one, it's really easy! If you've ever set up a set of speakers you can do it easily!

They are nice. I got mine though the gas company (if you sign up for two years, they will send you one for free), and it's easy to install and works well.

The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't use the temperature sensors in their smoke alarms to report back to the thermostat how warm other rooms in the house are. That would be useful for turning the fan on to circulate cool air throughout the house.

Although if you trigger a CO alert, if your furnace is gas, it turns it off.

Haha, my house has a programmable thermostat but this looks 10x cooler.

I'll bet you can't wait until Google decides to tell you what temperature is best for you, huh?

I found it hard to justify the price over a basic programmable thermostat. Just upgraded ours to wifi models (Honeywell) for very little money, and they have an app too! Really not a fan of 'automatic' programming. Especially with an old house with steam heat controlled by the downstairs thermostat, and a 2nd floor only central air system controlled by the upstairs thermostat! (seasonal of course - we don't try to have one fight the other although that could be fun when I'm ready to burn down the house).

I looked at these when we got our Honeywell programmable thermostat. I love the badass look it just had more features than we needed. I will get one at some time but the 45 buck one we got does all we need right now, turn down during the day when I'm not home and at night while I sleeps.

I put in a Honeywell programmable model 3 years ago. The logic doesn't work quite right on weekends, so we always have to turn off the program on Sunday night and turn it back on Monday morning, but otherwise it's been great. We've significantly reduced our usage in that time.

People suggest "get a Nest", and I admit it would be cool to control it from my phone...but the one I have now works and I doubt I'd save enough to justify the expense. I have other toys in mind for that money.

I've had one for a couple years now and it's been great. The "learning" part can get off sometimes (I drop the temp low one time and it starts doing it every day at that time), but other than that it's helped us lower our AC bill (we're in SoCal so we almost never use the heater).

You can also hook it up with the web service If This Then That (ifttt.com) and send you alerts or make it do things. For example: I get an alert if the house gets over a certain temp while I'm away. I can then login and lower the temp to cool the house before I get home, or set it not to cook my dogs. You can also do all kinds of other things ( https://ifttt.com/recipes/search… ).

One of the nicer things it does to save energy is if the air is dry enough it will run the fan for a bit after running the AC without the AC compressor. Since the AC condenser is still cold, blowing air past it gives you a bit of extra cooling without using as much juice.

My thought process too, the Nest cost more than it would benefit me.

I like the fact I can set mine and know that it will do the same process on the weekdays and weekends. The fact that I can "set it and forget it" (TM) is a big feature for me. I don't want to be constantly tuning it up and down, just one less thing to worry about.

If only it could sync to my never the same weekend schedule.

I work in a home office and do the exact same thing, turning on the AC from my cell phone in the afternoon if the house gets warm. It's also great for warming or cooling the house when returning from vacation.

Me too, but mine has turned from white to almond brown. Like old keyboards used to do. I don't see it saving me the $250 though. Unless it can also turn off the lights my wife is always leaving on.
