Problem: cant get the lid off the goddamn jar, and I REALLY want to finish these dilly beans. Tried using a piece of rubber to get a better grip, and smacking around the top to loosen it up. Got any other sharp ideas? Difficulty: stuff you have at the office

Edit: thanks all, hot water was the trick! Now I am going to house the rest of these delicious pickled treats

If you aren't worried about the lid, why not use a good ol' fashioned can opener?

This. One of those rubber bandy ones. If it works on my Volvo, it'll work on a mason jar.

Not sure what dilly beans are, but if they're sugary/sticky, run the lid under hot water to melt the sugars on the threads of the lid. Then use a towel for grip.

Use some tissue from the toilet? Use that to increase friction when grabbing the lid.

take a butter knife or something like that and dent the lid around the edge every 3/4 of a inch then try to open it.

Yes, the hot water does the trick.

This is why sometimes when you pass a jar around a group the 3rd or 4th person will get it because everyone is getting their warm hands on the jar.
