Talk to me - I had two of them in the late 70s.

How were they? I know nothing about them other then the fact I find them attractive on to a degree that I can not explain.

Well, one thing is that North Korea still owes Volvo over $400 million for the 4 door version of this, that are still in service. http://jalopnik.com/north-korea-st…

From these pictures, one might assume that the average Volvo 124 had only 3.5 wheels on the ground at any time.

it looks a bit like an early Escort from the side. I like it.

I love this picture a lot. I like how they covered the entire grille with driving lights, how insanely narrow the snow tyres are, and how sharply locked the steering is.

One 142S - 4 speed stick, carburetors - rebuilt the 2 carbs 3 times, if you get my drift. One 142E, fuel injection, automatic. Neither a bad car, but I could go out the junkyard back then and get anything I needed. I recall replacing window/window mechanism, grill (fender bender). After driving my dad's land yachts the steering seemed incredibly direct. And they were safe.

I've got a 144, not good looking in the same way as the 142, but I love it just the same. It's also the most comfortable car I've ever driven, and grips shockingly well for an almost fully original car on comically narrow tires

Hey there McS. So, I know this post is a little old, but I'll tell you about my 1974 142GL. It was my first car. My grandmother gave it to me when I was 15 and the car was as old as I was. She lived in Florida and by the time I got it the black leather seats had the texture of a pile of Doritos and the gold paint oxidized and faded into a sort of beige color. It had a crank sunroof, which I thought was really cool, and it was mine!

Since I couldn't drive the car until I was 16, my dad helped me fix it up. Dad must have been looking for a project. I found a company called IPD and we ordered a torquey camshaft and a set of overbore pistons for the B20 engine. We tore the thing apart and had the block machined. It had a Bosch mechanical fuel injection system that I took apart and cleaned all the varnish out of. It all went together smoothly and it ran great!

After doing that engine rebuild with my dad I felt like I could tackle any project on the car. My car had an automatic and it was the epitome of the term slushbox. I found a 145 stick shift wagon in town that someone was selling for $150!!! I swapped the pedal clusters and the transmissions in my parents driveway. I didn't even use a transmission jack to remove the manual. I just wrestled the thing onto my chest while laying under the car.

My car was transformed! Now I was doing burnouts for my friends and watching those skinny tires make clouds of smoke. I had so much fun in that car barreling down back roads pretending I was a rally driver.

Unfortunately my car was totaled by a drunk driver only two years after I got it. The little tank probably kept me and my friends from getting injured worse than we were, but it was gone. I ended up getting a '79 924 Porsche with the insurance money from the accident but I never liked it as much as the Volvo. I ended up selling the 924 a year later and buying a 242GT. The 242 wasn't the same though. There just something about that 142.

My dad had a crank sunroof in his 80's Celica and I loved that thing! IPD is pretty cool and they even have classifieds you can find a 142 in on occasion. I had a 740 wagon with a turbo and it was pretty cool but I definitely want a little three box coupe with a stick.
