Ok, so here's somthing interesting:

The cost to fill my 16-gal tank with regular unleaded is $51

The cost to fill it with premium unleaded is $55.68

...

My gas mileage average is 23mpg. On regular unleaded this is 14 cents per mile

Now, on regular gas my engine runs an extremely rich fuel mixture because it's knocking like hell. This also kills power.

Were I to run premium, power and efficiency would go up, and knock would go away.

I'm being conservative and estimating that my 85%-highway driving will increase by just 2MPG by having a much leaner fuel mixture, thus giving me 25mpg average

At 25mpg average, premium fuel costs 13.9 cents per mile.

It's cheaper for me to run premium fuel in my car by .1 cent per mile.

Badass.

2000 Buick LeSabre. Other owners report filling up and calculating 30mpg is rather common, so my 23mpg is pretty shit.

This is more common than people realize. My 1998 Mustang was the same way, it would chug about on 85 and get worse MPG. I also think they may have watered down the gas to get that low too...

Well I was wondering it was a car that required to take preminum.

My dad is going to have a stroke trying to get his mind around how "someone could design a car this bad" or whatever. I think the engine is just deteriorating with age and somehow increased knock is a result of that, for which my poor PCM is trying it's damnest to compensate for.

About 4 days ago, from "My Buick Is Too A Muscle Car".

I wanted to change my URL, but I had to change my name at the same time and I couldn't keep my old one because of Kinja's new length restrictions.

There's also the fact that 'bargain bin' gas now is not what it was 15 years ago, given the additives, ethanol content, and generally decreasing octane ratings.

Cover your basic maintenance. Plugs, air and fuel filters, wires, maybe a fuel injection cleaning/de-carb service. These should run just fine on regular and still do upper 20's mpg. A ton of carbon build up in the combustion chambers will cause your exact symptoms.

That would probably work. I would personally either use BG or GM Top End Cleaner. Whatever you do, make sure the engine is nice and hot when you start the cleaning process. Don't use one of the little bottles you just dump into the gas tank, you will never get anywhere that way, you need to get the cleaner directly into the cylinders.
