4472 - Flying Scotsman
First transmitted in 1968, this programme follows the attempt made to drive the 'Flying Scotsman' directly from London's King's Cross to Edinburgh's Waverley station without stopping, just as it was done 40 years ago. There is some spectacular aerial photography of the train en route and we meet the engine's owner, Alan Pegler, and some travellers and well wishers along the way.
This would be the worst documentary ever if you actually watched it for what it's supposed to be about, but the people in it are just extraordinary. It's hard to believe it's not a spoof, sometimes. Skip to 7.35 for an example. 19.53's another good one. And the chap at 17.32 and 26.26 is really rather special.
