Last night my buddy wrecked his damn Mustang. The crash was his fault, but I feel terrible for him. He only owned the car for two months. Guess its back to riding the bus for me and no more car for him :(

Yeah, proper 5.0 '94 Convertible Mustang GT :( Thing had one of the greatest exhaust notes I have ever heard.
Well, he was being reckless. I'm sure you saw how bad the storms were in Michigan. Well, me, him, and 2 other buddies were driving home from dinner. I was with my friend in his Ram, and he was driving right behind us with one of my buddies in the passenger seat. My buddy and I decided to make a stop and help some people, being that we were in a 4WD truck. They said that they'd meet up with us by the house. Well, we get to the house, and they're not there. I call my friend, who was in the car beside him. He tells me they got in a crash. We get to the scene. The car sideswiped a tree, and it was pretty well screwed up. What happened, you ask? They were out in the back of the neighborhood, drifting around in the rain. He tried to powerslide around the corner, lost control, and ran into a tree. Luckily, they are both okay. No injuries except for a bruise or two.
Yeah, only owned it for two months. The car had TONS of problems, but it was fun to cruise around in. Yes, it was his first car :(

You're in Michigan?? I did not know this.
And this is why I wasn't allowed a fun car as a first car, let alone a god damn 5.0L V8!! I would've loved one of those!! He better not be my age(19) or I'd deck him in the schnozz for this and he better not be allowed another 5.0L until he
a. Learns to DRIVE
b. Goes to a TRACK and learns how to DRIVE
c. learns how to DRIFT
While I'm okay with hooning, this shit pisses me off to no end, and in a neighborhood?? And in THIS weather?? What the hell?? He is the kinda person who gives Mustangs their stereotype and I would have bought the car off of him and saved it if it had so many problems!
His next car better be an econobox for what he did.
Sorry, but he shall get no sympathy from me!
On a side note, the '94-95 GT exhaust note is glorious!
He'll be screwed on insurance BTW. And I'd like to see the look on his parent's faces. :'(

It's a shame though, it was a cool car. Glad your friend is okay.

Yep, fellow Michigander. I live up in Holly, which is right in between Fenton and Grand Blanc.
Well, yeah. Granted, I'm not much of a better example, since I got something even more ridiculous. But I've had my car for a year now, and I baby it to death. There is no rain hooning in my car. Hell, there's not much hooning period in my car. Not to mention, I bought my car. His dad bought him that car, he put ZERO money towards buying it. And he is younger than you, so you have a complete right to kick in in the schnozz. He's 16. Luckily, I don't think he will be allowed to have any car for a while, unless it is a beater.
Well, partially in a neighborhood. In my neighborhood, we have an unbuilt neighborhood right behind us. The company went out of business, so there is like 3 houses. Otherwise, the roads are empty. Still ridiculous, nonetheless. Yeah, I couldn't even believe it. I went up to help him, but you have no idea how much of a look of disapproval I gave him. I couldn't talk to him until the next day. He is definitely the prime stereotype. He was a good driver, but was reckless as hell.
As for the Mustang, it wasn't amazing by any means. He bought it for $2700. It had a recovered title, but he didn't bother to get it checked by a mechanic. The car had a smidge over 144,000 miles. The 5.0 was developing a rod knock, but he didn't really know about it. The rear shocks were shot, so whenever you went over a bump, the body would scrape the driveshaft and make a horrendous noise. The car also had rust bubbling up on the top of the windshield frame, and well as a quarter-sized spot on the rear end. Was still a fun car, though. Shame it had to end the way it did.
Well, I don't have much sympathy either. He knew damn well what he was doing. He is one of my really good friends, and he loved that car to death, so I feel a little bad. Otherwise, I agree with you.
And holy wow, it was a fantastic exhaust note.

Well, I agree. As I said, I'm not really a good example either, since I got something even more ridiculous. You're not being rude, its the truth. He was being reckless, and he learned his lesson.
It is a shame. It was a fun car to cruise around in. I'm very glad they're okay, though. It could have ended MUCH worse.

Not to be a douche, but there was never such thing as a Bullitt convertible. Also, looks like it was either a '99 or '00 based on the rear spoiler. Bullitts were made in 2001 and 2008.

16 with a 5.0L Mustang?? Well I'll be damned, I can't believe his parent bought him that, WITH THEIR OWN MONEY! Granted, my mom bought me my first car(Saturn Astra) and I was 17. I guess the neighborhood situation is fine in this situation.
What I've learned is that no one is a good driver until they partake in one track day or Auto-X, mind you I haven't yet so I can't even call myself a good driver. I'd love to know the expression on his face post accident and how he was the next day though.
In any case, at least he's okay, but that Stang deserved a better driver or a better way to die, even if it was dying, could've been repaired and saved too.
Strangely, I saw a '94 GT Convertible with a rebuilt title on Craigslist a couple months ago, could it have been the same one?

Yeah. I couldn't really believe it either. I mean, its one thing to buy a 5.0 Mustang with your own cash, but it is a completely different thing to have your parents buy you one. As for the situation, it still wasn't the right time. It was a torrential downpour. I can understand why he thought it was a good time, but he should have at least done it in an empty parking lot or something. I mean, there is still traffic that goes through there.
That seems like a reasonable conclusion. I'd love to participate in a Track Day or Auto-X. Seems like it would be both a fun time and a learning experience.
The expression on his face? Kind of a look of astonishment and sadness. I didn't stay there for long, since he was extremely irritable, and his dad was coming. I didn't want to see what happened between him and his dad, so me and my two friends left the scene. The next day, he called me and apologized to all of us for what happened. I could tell he was still shaken up, so I only had a short conversation about the car. He says he is probably going to get rid of it. I would hope that he wouldn't keep it, since he is already at a loss with it.
It really did deserve both of those. He took care of it, but beat on it consistently, and I can contest to that. It could have been saved, but it would definitely be a labor of love. The powertrain would probably be worth saving, if it were rebuilt, possibly with all new internals.
It could quite possibly be the same one. If it looked exactly like the one in the picture (he changed nothing about it), and was $3000, it was it.

If one of my friends did that to their car I wouldn't believe it either. I mean my friends were being crazy in the storm, we drove up Woodward into the thing for giggles, but we didn't hoon about, we were careful.
I'll be honest, I would've loved to see him "talk" to his dad, god forbid if he's anything like mine, if I fucked up like that, oh lawd...But I know that his safety was not the first thing on that dad's mind, especially in this weather; rather, what the hell did you do to your two-month old car??
How's the motor in the car post-accident? Worth saving? I'm curious. Even though that 351 is the godsend motor I've been searching for, if it's magically gone before I pick it(praying that it'll be there next weekend), If he would part the car out...
I think it is the same one! I was looking for Mustangs under $3k back in June/July and a black rebuilt GT Vert(manual?) was for sale..

Well yeah, that's just fine. Just gotta be careful in those conditions. There's a time and a place for everything, and that was just not the right time.
I mean, I'm sure it would have been entertaining, but I didn't really want to sour anything. Oh God, if I screwed up like that, I wouldn't be allowed to drive until I moved out of the house. He would sell my poor car and not give me any of the money from it. And yeah, safety was obviously the least of his concern. His dad owns a Toyota Matrix. So, on our way home, my buddy stopped at his house to ask his dad if he could use the Matrix, since it would probably be unsafe to drive the Mustang. And you know what? His dad said no. Guess he deeply regrets that decision now.
The motor was not affected in the accident. The body is damaged, but the motor is just fine. Its probably worth saving. Granted, as I said, the motor was developing a rod knock and has more than 144,000 miles. It would definitely need a rebuild, probably with some new internals to be safe. Only issue is that I can promise you he won't part to car out. He probably couldn't do it, as it would devastate him even more emotionally. You would have to buy the whole car. From there, you could part the car out. I could always talk to him about it. Tell him that it would be going to a good cause.
I don't think its the same one. His car is actually dark green (the pic taken was taken on a potato camera). It was also an auto.

Agreed. I couldn't buy the whole car though; I've got nowhere to store a whole car and it'd ruin the surprise for my dad. I plan on rebuilding whatever motor I get anyways. It would be going to a good cause though; knowing that he's got another complete motor. I could do all the work and put the car back together like the motor was still in it. I'd like to keep it in mind, just in case I can't get the 351. :(
But I wouldn't spend like $3-400 for that motor for as much of a rebuild as it needs. I'm sure his dad is eager to get rid of that wreck. If he'd be interested in just the motor let me know. It's never an easy time losing a car, even if it's been only two months, that doesn't help either, but saving the heart of the car would be much better than sending the whole thing to the scrapyard.
The pic I saw was a potato pic in what looked like a one car driveway in the rain if memory serves me right, it was a dark color so it could be black or green.
And seeing that his dad has a Matrix, I'm kinda guessing at what his family may be like with that kinda car. It would've been much better though, but if he's this wreckeless, it would have only been a matter of time I bet.

Ah, I gotcha. That all makes sense. Personally, I think the 351 is the better option. Hopefully that works out for you, because, like you said, that is a great powerplant for the project in mind. Like I said, I can always mention it to him.
I would agree with you. That thing isn't worth any more than $300, in my opinion. Thing is, he probably won't go that cheap. He was always overconfident in that car in every aspect possible. That being said, he would probably think he could get more money than that. Going to a great project like yours, he might consider it. As I said, though, I'm not really sure what he's doing with the car yet. I'm almost positive he is getting rid of it, but I can't be sure.
It could quite possibly be it! That seems pretty similar to the ad I looked at when he sent it to me.
Yeah. I don't know, something tells me he wouldn't have done that with his dad's car. I don't think his family realizes how reckless he is though, since he might drive much more carefully with them. I completely agree that it would have happened sooner or later, though. I expected it to happen, just not that quickly.

Thanks, I hope it works out to I would love to have either and get to work on this as soon as possible. But what he doesn't know, is that even with my very little mechanical inclination, I know damn well how to be realistic and haggle for what needs to be haggled. Only an idiot would pay $400 and up for that one.
http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/pts/464173…
Lemme put it this way, there's a 5.0 HO(High Output) out of a '91 Mustang that has only 15,000 miles since it was last rebuilt for $200 in Washington up by Romeo. If I can get a freshly rebuilt motor that's better than his for $200, he's screwed if he's gonna try to sell it for top dollar, and knowing what condition it's in(not to throw you in the water), if he tried to tell me it was spotless and running good, seeing the wreck and hearing it run, I'd call instant BS. I could find running 302s for $150, so I'd offer between $125-$175 and call it a day and wish him luck with it if he couldn't sell it. (-_-)
Unlike him, I know what things are worth and I'll tell him that so there's no tricking me. I learned this from my mother(ex-realtor, and 19 years in retail), he couldn't beat me. If he's seriously getting rid of it, I will drive out to see it before he does and make an offer if the 351W is a no go(so hopefully he keeps the car for the next week or two).
If that's the same car then it sure is a small world haha! :P
His family needs to know so that other drivers can be SAFE!! I mean sure I have my fun here and there in my ST, but I'm not reckless about it; I'm always watching my back and sides and the front before I make any movement. Hopefully this'll be a lesson to him and whatever punishment he has or will receive.
I don't mean to sound condescending, I've had one minor mess up myself last winter but it wasn't as bad as what he did, and I was being very careful as well, but I wasn't prepared for FWD understeer so I hit a snow bank and damaged the front end of my Astra; lucky for me it was only $800 out of pocket, but I wish I had that $800 now.

Yeah, I gotcha. I would agree with you. That 5.o from the '91 Mustang seems like quite the good deal. I had no idea that 5.0's were that cheap these days. That being said, as you stated, he is going to be completely screwed trying to sell that thing. Eh, it wouldn't be throwing me in the water, since I would hate if he tried to screw someone by telling them it is in perfect condition. Your number definitely sounds like the proper price for it. On a side note, that '91 Mustang 5.0 for $200 looks pretty decent! He should be keeping the car for at least 2 more weeks, to my knowledge. As I said, I'm really not positive on what he is doing with the car, I'm just kind of expecting that he will sell it. I'm hoping the 351 works out for you, but I can always talk to him about this.
That sure would be funny if it were the same car! I wish I could remember the specific ad.
As I always say about honing and such, there's a time and a place for everything. There's nothing wrong with having some fun, as long as you are in control, cautious, and are in a safe place to do it. I would expect that he has learned a lesson tonight, but I don't think it will fully change his driving. Once a reckless driver, always a reckless driver, I personally think.
You're not sounding condescending, everybody makes mistakes. Stuff happens, and sometimes you can't be prepared for it. If it wouldn't have been his fault, it would be a completely different situation.
