I love turbos, but I hate turbos... but I love turbos. First bad sign: its a VAG 1.8T
End of July:
100k miles - The wastegate actuator starts failing on the (presumably) original turbo ...
So, I had a new, OEM ($) turbo installed. Feels great, feels better than when I first bought the car used. Went easy on it for 200+ miles and immediately did an oil change.
This month:
Yesterday I noticed a faint rattle on acceleration. I also notice that the new, month old turbo is suddenly emitting weird sound fluctuating/fluttering when pressure is high. However, this phenomenon does smooth out in the upper end of the power band.
This morning on first startup:
Rattling/metallic/clicking/ticking from the turbo side of the engine... [rage intensifies]. Revs make the metallic death pains disappear mostly, but when on boost, the fluttering/squirrel-in-my-month-old turbo remains.
Oh, I'm so excited. I'm thinking it must be some form of oil starvation or premature wear. The last time I heard this type of noise was on a GST Eclipse with sludge issues and a clogged oil pickup that ate two used turbos.
I think it might be time to fix and dump. But first, some alcohol... and some Tool/Zeppelin

Sounds like you might have sludge too which is very common on the 1.8T.

That would be sad and I was aware of that, so I've done about double the amount of oil changes I'd normally do on a car + using the biggest filter I can get. However, I have only had this car since April of last year. cot damnit.

Sludge will clog up the pick up in the oil pan and other orifices. Unfortunately extra changes won't remedy the issue.

Did the oil feed & return lines get replaced with the turbo as well? I won't warranty K03s we replace if they're not, because inevitably this happens. That said, the factory replacement turbos have been known to have issues. I've had them come out of the box seized, binding, or noisy more than a few times.

I've no idea about the oil feed lines. I tried to look for that when I got the car back and couldnt tell. This was from a high end euro independent shop/tuner. I do find that concerning about OEM turbo quality. I wonder if it has to do with the supplier or what?
I know from my experience in Audi/VW parts distribution, product often gets handled by butterfingers against the clock and usually thrown around from inbound to rack and then off into dealer cages with no regard. (Some of these people have no idea what they're handling)

That's true, for all I know they could have tested good at the factory & been damaged in transport. As far as oiling issues & sludging, usually when the oil pump pickup is clogged, the cam chain tensioner is first to suffer, and you'll see a code with the definition of "retard setpoint not reached". Also it'll rattle on startup in most cases.
