I've had this dream project car in my brain for quiet some time.
Take a first generation Honda Insight, preferably the latest model year it was produced, in a manual, and turn it into the most comfortable, most fuel efficient car I can.
My commute to work and from work consists of a lot of stop and go traffic down the 105 freeway in Los Angeles. It's the LAX freeway, basically. It gets really crowded. Sometimes when it's too bad I just putter a long surface streets in my WRX's stiff suspension. I'm nowhere near miserable in my WRX but it just feels wasteful to have that car lurching around in first and second gear for the majority of its life. Both a waste of car and fuel.
Now, I don't know if buying a second car, insuring both, would be the most cost saving tactic around, but it's just something I've been toying with in my head.
List of shit I've thought up to potentially do to the Insight:
Seat upgrades, head unit swap, lighter wheels, lighter brakes, reasonable weight savings cuts where possible to replace components (like, I'm not removing the passenger seat, audio, and the AC) air suspension, thinner tires if possible/safe, look into more fuel efficient ECU maps (if available), battery upgrades (way out of me league here).
The juxtaposition of owning those two cars amuses me. Also, I bet NPR sounds way better in an Insight.

I've been considering the same thing. I get the fuel mileage of a Prius without the associated smugness. If the Elio is ever released, I would consider one of those as well.

You forgot the LSx swap, because we all know its the most fuel efficient engine ever right? RIGHT???

That's a pretty great idea. I keep looking at these things and wondering what you could do if you updated the drivetrain a bit. Maybe a little diesel engine or something.

My car already gets 55mpg without any trickery or hypermiling. Other than it being very slow of course.

I doubt you would save money if you kept both cars, also I seriously doubt the modifications would be worth it. It sounds like a fun project, but I wouldn't go into it actually expecting to save money.

All I remember about doing something like this is that if you change anything electronic, you have to be careful because it's all so inter-related. OTOH, pretty much every modern car is like that.
