Dogapult has a '74 Celica. Well, more like 2/3rds of a '74 Celica if you factor in all the structural rust. He's been looking at getting another 70's Celica either as a parts car or a replacement. His has a good 22R 4-cyl. and 5-speed.

He says he found one for $900 in Michigan, which would be difficult to get back here. It has no engine or transmission.

I went on Craigslist, and I found this for $800:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

He thinks it's a bad idea to take a '94 Mustang and put a 70's Toyota 4-cylinder and 5-speed into it.

I think it's a bad idea to spend more money (gas, tow dolly rental, etc) to drag a '77 Celica all the way here from Michigan.

Who's right?

He's right about it being a bad idea to take a '94 Mustang and put a 70's Toyota 4-cylinder and 5-speed into it. It would be tons of custom work for a car that was really slow and disappointing. As far as towing the other car home, that's a matter of what his time is worth.

Putting a 70's Toyota engine(if original, would probably be an 18R, 22R didn't come until 1981), would be a terrible idea. The Mustang is incredibly heavy compared to the Celica, and would be way more trouble than it's worth to install.

I would say just get the Celica, it would probably be more fun to drive. . . even if only half of it is there.

His Infiniti doesn't have a hitch and has a tow rating lower than most bicycles.

My Ram 50 doesn't have a hitch and I wouldn't trust it over 1000lbs. for towing.

It was the 18R. He puked it and got a 22R. I don't really care a lot about old Toyotas so I don't know what years what motors were made.

The problem there is that *he* can't tow anything - his car is not capable of it. So it would have to be my truck - which could handle about 1000lbs. of towing... if it had a hitch. Which it doesn't.

U-Haul rentals are cheap. But that's my 2 cents. I was dumb enough to roadtrip to another country for a $400 crap can that my father backed into the previous owners garage when he found out it had no brakes. That's how he figured it out rather.

Sounds like both ideas are less than desirable. What kind of truck do you have? U-Haul to my knowledge will only rent car dollies to someone with a full size truck and class 3 hitch.

If it weren't for that fact that it would be a eunuch beyond imagining, a 94 Mustang with Toyota power would make for a pretty decent car.

That being said, toying back another Towota is not without flaws of its own - compounded by whatever the distance is.

Maybe the solution is not Mustang so much as watch and wait for closer 70s Toyotas to come up - I'd have thought it would be as easy or easier to find one in Wis than MI, but maybe THE IMPOSSIBLE IS REAL and there are no Celicas in Wis with the ability to hold a magnet anymore.

Regardless, Operation Twist Tohru's Arm To Make Him Tow My Junkheap sounds like it runs the risk of being Dogapult's version of Market/Garden in scope, scheduling, expense, pointlessness, and loss of life. Down to whether SHAEF approves it, I guess.

As much as I like the Mustang, I don't think it's a great idea shoving Celica mechanicals into something heavier than the original car. Make an event out of towing the Celica back - time for roadtrip?

I have an '88 Ram 50 2wd with the 2.0L 4G63B and a 5-speed.

I honestly believe that his Celica is the only one in Wisconsin that is at all capable of moving under its own power... or would be, if the motor for it wasn't in the garage.

He said he found one in the Rockford area but they haven't responded to email. I think my dad would let me borrow his Impala and the dolly from work to get it. After all, an old Celica is lighter than an Escort, and it handled that just fine.
