I'm about to make an inflammatory statement regarding Subarus:

[Line break for clickbaiting. And you're here! Which means it worked! Muahahahahaahaha!]

Kinja'd!!!

From the late '90s until the 2010 restyle, the best looking Subaru was consistently the Legacy/Outback, with the above iteration being the cream of the crop.

Before you throw me off a cliff, take a moment. Imagine every single Subaru somehow magically had the same power, the same handling, the same weight, and all the same capabilities and features. The only difference between them was the physical appearance. In this utopia of Subaru performance could you really choose one of the others over the Legacy/Outback? If not, what would you say looks better?

Not even a question I have to think about, I've been saying this for years that the 3rd gen Impreza was the best looking car they've ever done. I think it was one of the most balanced looks between funky/quirky and smooth. I know the image is of the WRX (which IMO is very tasteful) but even the regular hatch/wagon looks good.

looks, absolutely, amongst every other value I have in a car. Give me an H6 LL Bean Legacy wagon with dual sunroofs any day over a WRX.

Haters, to the left for sucking it duty

I do like the looks of it in WRX/STi trim, but the base look never quite did it for me. I may have a slight wagon bias that's influencing me though...

The only thing I don't like in that picture is that mid-height trim piece, which I don't think they all came with? IIRC my friend's doesn't have it and it looks very clean and sort of perfect without it.

Best looking overall for me was the 99-01 2.5RS coupe. Overall though, I'd agree that the legacy/outback have had consistently the best look over time.

The best looking subaru is..... the Saab 9-2x Actually I do like the saabaru (and own one so I'm partial) but my all time favorite has to be the 3rd gen impreza wrx hatchback, especially in blue. SO GOOOOOD. I think that's my next car once I wear out this one. I had a 2000 outback before, I just always felt like I needed to have kids before I would fit in well with it.

I also might get a 01 Legacy as my first car.

The best Subaru is the Impreza 22B:

The second best Subaru is the Legacy S402:

But does the 22b achieve it's top spot due to it's looks or it's pedigree/capabilities? In appearance it's not that far off a 2.5RS. That Legacy S402 looks like pure sex though.

I did say late 90's-2010. Otherwise I'd have to call this the best looker.

I agree that generation of Legacy was very well styled. They hit the nail on the head.

But... 2006-2007 WRXs were much sexier to me. Loved the aggression.

Doesn't 1993-1998 count as mid-late 90's?

Otherwise:

22B is because of a combination of both those things. But I'm a sucker for boxed fender flares.

I consider late 90's to start around 97/98.

I said up top that I was talking purely about looks, not factoring in performance or prestige at all. Fair enough on the boxed fenders though :)

The Sambar Classic was built between 1993 and 98, therefore it is a late '90s Subaru. Thankfully, they kept the Classic for the succeeding Sambar.

What I hate is that they are slowly but surely killing off their wagons and moving to sedans and SUV/CUVs

Subaru was big into pseudo-retro cars back in the '90s.

I feel like they've already pretty much done it. The Outback and Forester are effectively CUVs, the Impreza is a hatch. The only Subaru I'd truly call a wagon is the Legacy Touring, which we don't get in the states.

The Forester is almost as big as the Ford Escape! It has more clearance than most Bro trucks!

When I was driving into work a Subaru add came on the radio and the new tag line just sounded like nails on a chalk board:

"It's not just a sedan. It's a Subaru."

Won't someone think of the wagons!
