Cowl induction scoop. Mostly just extra room for the air cleaner and carbs

Cowl-induction hood. It lets the motor suck in fresh cool air from the high-pressure area at the base of the windshield.

Cowl induction hoods like that are better for getting air out of the engine bay. The air going over top creates a low pressure area, which sucks the air through the engine bay and out the top.

Mostly they're for clearing taller intake setups.

There is a high pressure area in front of the windshield which is then "sucked" into the lower pressure engine compartment.

They suck.

Care to elaborate, I barely even know what they do.

Opposite, they are for getting air into the engine bay. There is a nice big high pressure area at the base of the windshield, and the cowl intake takes advantage of this to force cool, clean, air under the hood.

For when you realize the intake and carb you put in just a little too tall.

Yes, this is why they're called "induction" hoods.

the really tall ones are mainly for clearance. The original cowl hood, option ZL-2 was designed for the 69 Camaro Z/28 for trans am racing. It's purpose was to get a straighter shot of the high pressure air at the base if the windshield into the motor.

Chevy had been using similar forms of what the cowl hood did before but using the cars cowl vents to suck the air and using a special air cleaner that had a snorkel hooked up to a hole in the firewall above the heater box to draw the air.

The production cowl hood had a flap in the scoop that was vacuum operated and would open at a certain amout of throttle. Kinda like how the little flapper works on a 70 Chevelle(drive one in forza to see it)

Here's an article that may help you to understand it better.
