My friend called me at 11pm last night and said he NEEDED a '60's car with wire wheels. Now wire wheels can't be pulled off by any car and to make things more tricky, he only has 5-8k to spend. He says MG's are too common. (I disagree) What are affordable '60's cars that can pull off the look of wire wheels?
My first thought was an old Jaguar XJ12 sedan. My friend is pretty handy and his dad restores Rolls Royces so maintenance could be dealt with. They're powerful, available and most importantly, they have a classic shape that looks great on wire wheels. Any other ideas?

This is an interesting set of criteria.

You left this very open ended :) If it's not cars from the factor with wired wheels...
how about whatever this thing is?
Or this?

Old Jaguar for $5-8K? Is this a friend, or a "friend"?

Anything that looks good with wire wheels is fair game. The Volvo is a great one I hadn't thought of!

That Volvo P1800 rocks the wire wheels nicely, and rougher versions can be had in the aforementioned price range.
Non stance-nation folks may have a problem with the Beetle, though.
Where have all the lightweights gone?

I haven't spoken with him for years, but I have a friend that's a mechanic at a Jaguar dealership (or was when I last spoke with him). He hated the old V12s. I remember him saying, "Just as they were starting to get [V12s] right, they quit making them."
Another anecdote he related was of a fellow buying an 80's V12 XJ-S from his dealership because they wanted less than $10K for it (early 2000's) and he thought it was a steal. When he came to pick it up, they asked where his trailer was. He said he didn't have one, and was going to drive it from (either Cincinnati or Lexington) to western NY. He started the car & drove away, and called them to come help him within 30 minutes. They dispatched a mechanic and got him going, only to hear from him maybe 30 minutes later. Same result, and the guy called once more an hour after. They refused to dispatch anyone once he got out of Ohio.

Austin Healey roadster. 100 or 3000, doesn't matter, they look amazing with wire wheels.
I'd a post a pic of one that my friend has (which is powered by a 302 monster), but I'm not in front of my normal computer at the moment. If you watch the last couple minutes of this , you can see the car, but the exhaust sound isn't very accurate to what the car sounds like in person.

I'd guess a $5K-$8K would be. If this is gonna be a second car, maybe he could get away with it. I'd never recommend an old Jag as a daily driver, unless you really don't have anywhere to be on time. The days that it was working would be glorious. The rest would not be so happy. Just my opinion...YMMV.

That's true, plus this was a joke. I actually hate those wheels on it. Although I do like the BBS wheels on them.

Yeah I believe a 1965 Miata is called an Elan haha and gold BBS's on an NA are an awesome look!

Are you looking for a fixer? One this clean or convertible isn't going to meet the price, but one a little not-so-nice might. And I'm almost certain these are hubcaps.
