I feel old today OPPO, my oldest daughter is in kindergarten officially. Might as well start hunting up a car for her now. Hell I had my first car ('59 Bus) at 9. I will spare you the pics of first day because this ain't facebook. What would be a good classic first car? It will be 2024 before she can drive it.

Honestly? An original Miata would be classic by then or a fox body Mustang. Yikes this makes me feel old

Geo Metro. Go small if you're gonna do gas, and by then it'll be a classic.

Not to practice one-upmanship, but my oldest boy started middle school this year (6th grade). It's the first time all three of my boys (the younger ones are twins) won't be at the same school. Tempus fugit.

Naturally, I'd recommend a Saab 900. However, knowing your family's aversion to said brand, Volvo 240.

Beetle 2.0
My youngest start kindergarten next year and my eldest start middle school this year. Her first car will be a Beetle 2.0 unless something changes in the next ~5 years.

Hmmm... 2024. So '14 models and older will be considered well-used cars by then, so crazy, haha.
So... 1999 models will be importable! So how about a 1997 406 :D

College money is already in the bank via grandparents. IF they want to go. I don't particularly believe in scaring them into it. The most happy, successful people I know never went or dropped out and lived life and got valuable experience that way

I know. It'll be our first VAG product. In both sides of our families are far as I know if you don't count the In-laws brief ownership of an All-Road. That's kinda weird now that I think about it.
Oh wait my dad did have a beetle 1.x in his junkyard so we technically owned that.
Maybe Beetle 3.0 will be affordable enough in 6 years?

that or a Trans Am GTA. I had one on long term loan once, and automatic with T tops and DEM GOLD RIMS. Not much of a pony car guy, but they are just so fun. Here is a friends with 25K miles on it, stick. WAAAAAAAANT

MkV Rabbit. By then it will be as classic as the original rabbit, and the 2.5 is bulletproof. Plus, they're a lot of fun if you get one in 170hp guise.

Consider the Scion FRS Subaru BRZ.
Here's why:
Power
Enough for safe, spirited driving once she gains experience; but not too much to get into trouble.
6-speed
Learning to drive a manual will hasten her understanding of momentum, which will reinforce the importance of follow-distance. (Also, she won't become one of those slushbox-only drivers, who invariably mash between the quick!-close-that-gap! and the shit!-don't-hit-that-car! pedals.)
RWD
Take her to an empty parking lot after a rain storm and teach her about vehicle control, grip limits, and oversteer. (That's why you post to Oppo, isn't it?) Add snow tires for easy driving in wintry conditions.
2+2 Seating
Sure, fellow teenage passengers are a concern for new drivers, but the back seats are tiny. Fit four when you need it, but it's effectively a coupe.
Warranty
CPO vehicles have the powertrain warrantied to 100k. Maybe you don't find a CPO model with <100k by 2024. But still: a 2.0L boxer, 6MT with LSD is a fairly simple machine by modern standards.
Maintenance
DIY maintenance: oil changes are a snap (pop the hood and you can't miss the filter staring back at you). Trans and diff fluid changes are simple too, which means she'll also learn how to lift and jack a car. And rotate tires.
Safety
Highest marks in all tests except for the small front overlap test, where the BRZ earns average marks – a situation she won't encounter because she'll be a safe driver
Fuel Economy
I get mid-high 20 MPGs when driving like a teenage, up to 36 MPGs like an adult. Asking her to pay for her own fuel won't be too onerous, and will reinforce personal financial responsibility.
2.0 Limited trim
The on-board jack and spare tire, USB charge port, smartphone Bluetooth integration, and GPS navigation means she'll never have a valid reason to stay out late : )
Yes, I'm obviously a fan. But it's a reasonable choice that you could certainly enjoy before she becomes a licensed driver on her own. Cheers.

good writeup. I wonder what these are going to be selling for at that point. She will know standard some time around 12-13 like I did. Pops used to take me on dump runs in the subaru GL turbo 4wd wagon and make me drive home uphill. Steep hills too. And I learned all of my control from banging a Fairmont around fields and marshes since I was 10 or so. We would flip the damn thing over and my friends grandpa would come out with the loader and flip us back right again. It was a wonderful way to learn

Glad to hear it, it's a vital skill in my book.
What a great bit about flipping the car over and back again! Certainly couldn't do that with a modern SRS, ABS, A-to-Z equipped vehicle..

The Rabbit was made from 2006-2009, with the 170hp version being used for the second half of 2008 and 2009. Before that it was 150hp, but there's also a lot of reflashes out there to get the early engines up to 170-180hp.
