The 2CV broke down but was still usable enough to be a motorcycle? I'm skeptical

I don't remember all the details about the story, but something didn't seem right.
Why was he trying to cross the desert in a 2CV?
I think it took him weeks to make that. Why not walk out?

When he started building, he though it'd take 3 days to build it but it took him 12 instead.
I guess he continued to wrench on it thinking it would be done by the next day.
Fucking DIY projects always take longer than you think!
I can't find anything debunking it though. The story first appeared in a French 2cv magazine in 2003.

Be as skeptical as you like, but the story is well documented in multiple places. He snapped one of the main chassis beams towards the rear which caused the rear suspension on that side to collapse. As a 2CV is FWD the drivetrain was unaffected.
