I may be a completely biased douchebag BMW owner but that doesn't mean I'm not right haha.

No you're totally right! I've driven Miatas, a regular flavor E46 and E90, and M3 versions, a 911, and an S2000 (and hundreds more), and I can tell you the Miata sucks. It's just too goddamn small, and slow. At least in the S2000 I don't have to duck, it's a bitch to get in and out, but I'm somewhat comfortable in it. I can't think of anything good with the Miata.

And the E46 M3 is possibly one of the best cars, and especially at its current price.

The main reason for me not getting a S2k/BRZ/FRS or MX5 was the lack of power. I won't lie I haven't driven any of them but a good friend had a FRS for about 3 months before he sold it back because it was so slow. Basically everything I read told me the E46 had handling on par with all of those PLUS that awesome BMW Motorsport N/A I6 which is a win-win.

Also it seems everybody still compares enthusiast cars to the E46 and a majority of the time it seems the E46 wins every category except for the Tech segment (there are some awesome aftermarket options like the AVIN 2), which for an enthusiast car is generally the least important.

I haven't driven an FRS, but I've driven a Miata, and it's the same thing.

The thing for me is the E46 M3 is just perfect in almost every way. It's practical, it's insanely comfortable (not just for its handling level, but compared to "comfortable cars", it's got a shit ton of power, but not too much, and my god the handling, THE HANDLING! It's so balanced, but my god it's tail happy. I had one for a week, I threw it into a turn I take everyday, and HELLO OVERSTEER! But because of the balance of the car I caught it without even thinking, it was awesome.

The sound it makes too is just orgasmic.

Happiness is nothing more than hearing the S54 rev to redline.

Don't you need the CSL cams to get the full benefit of the airbox though?

Hmmm, I may be inclined to agree.

I really don't want to own one, but I definitely want to drive one. Perhaps rent one for a month, or borrow one from somebody.

The reason I want to is to set a benchmark for some future cars that I want to build. The main one is I want to make a Jaguar XJS that has roughly the same power and roughly the same weight as an E46 M3.

My maths suggest it should be doable, although it will probably be trickier than I think.
