What does NA stand for? Does it stand for Naturally Aspirated? What about North American? You know because its called the MX-5 in some places.

NA is the 1st gen chassis code, Mx5, Miata and Roadster are model names.

NA is the designation for the first generation chassis. The NB is the second gen, NC is the current (3rd) gen and the ND is just about to be unveiled.

it stands for "new approach." the miata was considered a bold new step in car design at the time, and that was the internal codename they chose.
for the next generation they decided that the old powertrain was good, but the fascia needed to be updated for the new millenium. "new body."
in 2006 the miata was basically the same it had been since 89, (minus the "new body" styling) so it got a whole new update. "new car"
now, the new one is supposed to harken back to the NA while incorporating all the advances and comfort of the NC. it's going to be known as the ND, "next-generation design"

It is just people talking chassis codes, it is the same behavior with the Bimmer people when they say E30, E46, E90, etc. Simple as that. Now you know and you too can speak Miata language. . .

I thought it was real. It made sense.
Now I'm confused.

It's derived from the VIN. JM1NA... is the first generation, JM1NB..... is the second, JM1NC..... is the third, I would assume the ND will be JM1ND....
