The V10 article prompted my interest in used Touareg's. While the V10 is an awesome engine and can sound delicious (see video below), the V6 is bound to be more frugal when compressing dino juice. I see mid to high 20's in mpg claims on a myriad of places. Maybe some people that eek out 30+. Which may actually be fairly feasible with the removal of some emissions bits and the addition of a tune?
It also seems they are quite capable haulers with a ~7000lb towing capacity. It's also not disappointing as far as power goes at 407 ft-lb and 221 horsies. Again, a tune here, I imagine can unlock quite a bit more.
I found a price of about $19k for an !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with just under 100k miles (a 2010 model). This being a diesel it's only just getting broken in, right?
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
And because it sounded so darn sexy (I do however think the wheels are in poor taste) here is a V10 with some exhaust work, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !
I don't think i am at all in the market for this or the Trailblazers I researched earlier, but I do like both in their own right and perhaps one day I will find myself with a need for either, so i should totally research them right? It's fun.

I'd rock a Touareg TDI. They're on my shopping list for next year when the updated 2015s come out. New ones are crazy expensive and don't hold their value very well though.
The good thing about this one is that it's been driven, the only hesitations are that it may be due for a major service @ 100k. This is the last year before a redesign as well.

I like the Touareg. I think it looks really cool, and has so much less of that Porsche pompousness than the Cayenne. Not sure about what to look for in a used model, but presumably the diesel will last a long time with proper maintenance. Good luck!

I got to drive a V10 TDI a couple months ago, towing our race car to the track. It was amazing. There's a mountain range north of LA you have to get over on the way to Buttonwillow and this thing didn't break a sweat while pulling over 3500lbs of car, trailer, and parts. And it averaged almost 20mpg! My Tahoe would get less than 10mpg on the same trip.
I told the owner (one of my teammates and owner of a German auto repair shop) that I really want one now but he talked me out of it when we stopped for breakfast (he was driving his lifted VW camper van). He showed me a video of the timing gears. It looks like a Swiss watch! No belts or chains anywhere on the motor. Something goes wrong in there and it's many thousands in repair costs. His advise: get one under warranty and sell it before it goes out of warranty.
So the V6, while not a V10, is probably the smarter way to go (unless you have lots and lots of money).

For the love of fuck stay away from the V10TDI. They are good cars except for the fact that they go wrong all the time and are extremely difficult to fix. Most maintenance requires removing the entire engine http://www.reddit.com/r/Justrolledin…

On paper, the V10 looks great, but I'm willing to bet that with the normal Touareg being such a beast of maintenance and reliability burdens, the V10 isn't going to fare any better.

Lol, maybe if I were to pick one up I'd get it right after 100k miles.

Yeah, I'm thinking that V10 is in the same maintenance category as a Phaeton.

Yeah I read that, that's why I am posting about the V6, haha.

That's why this post is about the V6... It was only inspired by the used V10's for sale post.

Check out the maintenance schedule < http://pics.tdiclub.com/data/516/2010_… >.
I stand corrected, the major services are at 40 / 80 / 120k. The major one is the DPF @ 120k. I can't imagine that would be cheap...

Hmm, I got a fix for that.
We don't need no stinking (literally) DPF.

No. The V10 is the next category up from the Phaeton. It is a galactically complex machine.

Hahaha. Those timing gears do sound like a nightmare!

That gen Touareg is honestly perfect, minus some electrical gremlins every now and then. Its super over engineered plus great handling. The TDI just enhances the awesomeness of that car!

I drove a first gen V10 TDI a few months ago and absolutely loved it.
