Firstly, I'm not talking about F&F-style sprints through the city dodging cars and running red lights. I'm talking about the classic 0-60 from a red light, just two guys and their muscle (or other) cars seeing what they're like at full chat for a few seconds.
*insert poll here, just respond in the comments because I dunno wat do*
So what do you think, is this sort of thing something to be shunned and the competitors to be hanged by Johnny Law, or is it a fun getaway for two people to revel in the feeling of speed?

Majority here will say no. I don't endorse it but I'll be damned if I don't take an opportunity when it arises.

Racing between lights? I say why the hell not.
I've done it a couple times with people, nothing too dangerous about it.

Because you SHARE public roads with everyone. That said larger cities should build multipurpose racing complexes, to get this off the streets.

Potential danger aside, I've never really seen the appeal to be honest. I suppose it doesn't help that the kinds of junctions that allow for that sort of thing - a set of lights, with two lanes next to one-another that just go straight ahead - are incredibly uncommon where I live.

If no one's around and the roads aren't congested, why the hell not? I've done it many times since I got my FoST, I hope it never goes away. It's 'Murican tradition in many ways. Just don't get caught by the Rozzers(Johnny Law or whatever you call them) and have some fun! Just don't push it.

3 rules:
1. Never with a passenger.
2. Never in a car that isn't yours.
3. Never on a road with any sort of traffic whatsoever.
The other 7 commandments:
4. The entire 'track' must be visible by people. Don't race where someone isn't looking.
5. Close the intersections you're going through.
6. Never do anything you haven't done before. No "drifting" no "launching" no going any speeds you haven't done safely in that car previously.
7. (part of a visible road) have someone specified to call an ambulance in the event of a wreck.
8. You don't drive unless you've watched enough that other people think you're able to.
9. Never bet in your own race, it encourages bonehead moves to try and win.
10. Never race angry.

But it's only safe for you because you have a 13 second 0-60 time. You're basically flooring it every time a light goes green ;)

I do it in the truck and Saturn and they're a lot faster.
And I do not have to floor it to get away from lights!

Racing complexes wouldn't help at all, would cause more damage through wasted tax dollars than they would help. I wish the answer was that simple.

Really all depends. I will never intentionally put the lives of other drivers in danger. A sprint to 60 on an open road where I could only hurt myself and or ego, sure.
I just hate when people always brag about racing people all the time putting everyone in danger, what do you really prove? Darwinism?

I was just kidding :)
But you should be careful not to do it too much in any car. You never know what dangers lurk on public roads...

There's an entire culture of capability, machismo, status, wealth, capacity, intelligence, and above all, courage, behind it. It's quite the incredible experience, and it draws people to it much like people are drawn to boxing, or skydiving, despite how dangerous they can be. It's just a little more extreme than professional racing because of that.
In professional racing, your biggest concern is all the technical stuff on maintaining a high speed and outsmarting the other guy. In street racing, often times all it takes to consistently win is a fast car and lots of courage. The quality of your character and your survival instinct gives you more money and success in street racing than probably any other job out there.

Just admit you secretly want a racing complex nearby that is cheap and subsidized for you.
I do too.

All I'm saying, is if there's no one around, not a car or person in sight, leaving the only casualties as the two "racers", then it's on them to do with what they will; if the mess up, it's on them. Doesn't matter how many laws are made, nothing will stop this from happening.
I'm just saying don't do it in any sort of congested traffic or in public areas where there might be potential harm done to bystanders on the sidewalks.
Come to Woodward sometime and you'll see what I mean.

Oh, sorry, I wasn't clear there: I understand the appeal of street racing, even if I'd never take part in it myself. It's the 'drag race between the lights' thing specifically that doesn't really do it for me.

But I do.
Like the idiot in the Mercedes GLK who veered over into my lane TWO TIMES in THIRTY SECONDS.
Then gave ME the finger for honking at HER.

Back 50 years ago, when all this was created, that used to be the only way to street race, because that's where you could get an unbiased flagger (the light) on a 2-lane road. There didn't exist wide intersections or complex passes, and lights were generally at least 3-4 blocks away from eachother, only the busiest intersections had them.

yes because there are no drag strips or road courses that are close enough. There is an Oval not to far for lower level NASCAR racing, so there's that.

I suppose that's the reason, then: here, we've never really had roads like that. Street racing has always been more about dashing along tight, winding country roads, hemmed in with hedges on either side. People will generally do it rally-style, and try to get the fastest time along a particular stretch, or go for a 'keep-up' style event, where you take turns trying to get a certain distance from the person behind.
I don't know anyone involved in it personally, but you hear about from time to time. Idle chatter at work or college, or occasional news stories. Personally, I'd rather a track day.

And someone needs to dub this video over with the audio from that video of the drifter where the driver goes "fucking wanker".

I've done it twice. Second time cops were in the other lane, gave me a finger waggle, gave my friend a ticket for "stunting". Haven't done it seriously since. Not worth the ticket.

Well, it helps to know the limits of your car, do it on a straight road, and not be a jackass. Honestly I have no problem with people wrecking their own cars because they were racing.

Yeah, Kansas is full of long, straight, flat roads and if I find myself at the line when the light is red next to some punk in an M3 you bet I'm gonna let loose a little. No burnouts or anything, just an Italian tuneup.

Why the hell would someone do that in downtown Wichita when you could go south to K15 or west to Kellogg where there is nothing alongside the roads.

I think it's ok on an empty road, I also love goading Honda fan boys when I drive my dad's Fit with the loud exhaust. It's all bark and no bite, and they take that shit too seriously.
