3,500 miles, driven solo, with trips through downtown Las Vegas, downtown Reno, and downtown Toledo. Two broken tow straps, three junked trailer tires, one night sleeping in the cab, one night sleeping in the "attic" over the cab, two nights sleeping in the guest rooms of people I'd never met before. Come at me, bro.

I'm assuming you didn't rent from Penske because you're putting every last penny in the truck and/or you're a Ganassi fan.

Gotta hand it to doug though, even mundane trips in a van draw the views. Im pretty sure I would rather here about your story though.

Penske wouldn't let me rent from them because the race truck was "too long for the trailers"

Wow. That's harsh. One of the reasons I much prefer having my own tow rig and trailer, and/or not using Uhaul.
I drove a Penske moving truck not much bigger than that with a car on trailer from Phoenix to Boston. Took me 5 days and I stayed (or rather didn't stay) in one of the scariest motels I've ever seen. $26 a night... left at 3:30 AM.

My mother in law drove the 26' from Tampa to Ohio in 2004. She didn't have a cell phone and hit something in every state. We also lost her in rush hour traffic when she missed the exit in Knoxville and my wife got back on the interstate and chased her down at over 100 mph weaving in and out of traffic. Scary times.

I have a tow rig now, but didn't have one yet then. Also I bought the truck in Vegas, so it was logistically easier to fly in, rent the U-Haul, and tow it home to Mass. The only hotels/motels I stayed in were the ones in Nevada when we had the entire race team. Once they flew out and I got on the road for home I stuck with free sleeping quarters only. Mostly because I was already spending about $5,000 on the U-Haul. When the race truck broke in Nevada we did nearly stay here, but they were booked up. Talk about dodging a bullet.

Hey, I wanted a Penske. Their prices were better.

Yeah it was nuts. My mother in law is one of those kind of helpless people if she got lost on her own with no way to get a hold of us I don't know what she'd do.

I've often thought of hanging a hammock across the box, may be more comfortable than the deck. Only about a foot off deck, not quite confident in my sleeping activities as sheets always end up at foot of bed.

My biggest fear when I was sleeping in the attic was rolling over, falling off the shelf, and slicing myself open on one of the spare radiators or something

Penske's trucks are miles and miles better, too. Shame about the truck length.

Question — when you slept in the cab, were you not worried about theft of your truck or your stuff in back? I was super scared.

Not really. In part because I had a padlock on the back of the U-Haul and on the trailer chain wrapped around the truck's axle tube, but mostly because I was parked up outside a hotel in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the least intimidating city in America.
