It looks too FWD. I would like to see more space between the wheel arch and door, and less in front of the wheels. Then, I think the design would be great.

Yo, there is a (good) reason its like that.

I know. Is the A8 based on a VW platform?

There is a reason it looks like that. The last proper RWD production Audi was built in the 1930s. Everything since then has been either:
a) FWD/ FWD based AWD
b) an R8

That wouldn't be totally wrong thought as not all A8s are 4wd models. A8 2.0 TFSI Hybrid is available only as fwd.

I think they share it with VW, but its theirs. IMO I'd happily sacrifice some looks for Quattro. But then again I live in Michigan.

I think the S class is superior in every way.

I knew that most are FWD based, but it didn't think everything was.

Most VAG are that way, except for the really High-end stuff.

Well yea, now it is. Last year though I would of had a totally different opinion.

Calling it "FWD based" it doing quattro a rather large disservice.

I still would rather have an S Class even last year. The Audi looks like cheaper models, it doesn't look too tier.

FWD based as in "based on an FWD Platform" -.-

I know where it doesn't look cheap ….
I'd take that over this.

….. but they isn't doe.* Most Audi's share a specific chassis separate from the VAG group engineered for Quattro. Yes there are FWD base models, but its ground up audi for AWD.

From Autocar on a 6 year old article.
" Top of the pile: 'MLB'
The VW Group's largest new platform will allow it to develop the next Audi A6, the new VW Phaeton, the next Bentley Continental GT and anything in between. It allows engines to be positioned longitudinally in the engine bay, and for power to be channelled to all four wheels, and is already serving under the new Audi A4 and A5."
*disregarding the A1, A3 and TT.

I never thought of "looking FWD" as an insult, but I'll use it more often.

Still the best looking full-sized luxury sedan until the big Caddy flagship comes out.
I hate the new S-Class. Period, end of story.
The 7 is old and just... meh.
The A8 is unoffensive and rather handsome in black. Plus Quattro bro.

So what? Most "premium" cars use platforms that are engineered to incorporate both 2WD and AWD drivetrains. BMW does. Cadillac does. Dem Japanese do. Doesn't change the fact that Audis are descendants from the 2-stroke FWD DKWs of the 1930s.

WAT.
Cadillacs are decedents of V16 uber sedans, doesn't they didn't make this.

Thats the point, what do Audi cars of the 30's have to do with this convo …...

Simple, really: After WW2, what was left of the Auto Union relocated to west germany, continuing to build DKW cars based on pre-war designs. In 1958 that company was taken over by Daimler-Benz, who began development of a new car and a new 4-stroke engine to replace the crappy old two stroke. That new car, called the F102, was introduced in 1963 but still made use of the old two-stroke engine. Then, in 1965 Volkswagen bought the Auto Union from DB, along with the new engine, which was then squeezed into the F102, which also received a minor restyle and was renamed Audi F103 to get rid of the old DKW two-stroke image and in reference to the front-wheel drive Audis of the 1930s. However since the F103 was essentially a F102 with a new, longer engine and in order to avoid having to redesign the car's front end the (longitudinally mounted) engine was located in front of the front axle with the radiator located to the side of the engine. The engine was effectively touching the radiator grille. This is an F103 drivetrain:
And this is an F103 profile view:
And basically all Audis with the exception of VW based cars have copied that layout (longitudinal engine in front of the axle, FWD/AWD) ever since. The same layout as used by the 1939 DKW F9 (previous FWD DKWs actually had transversely mounted engines, because fuck you Mini, you were not the first ) and its successors. The were also FWD Audis back in the 1930s, but these used a reversed engine-transmission design like older french FWDs. The F103 evolved into the 80 B1 and spawned the 100 C1, which then evolved over the years into the current A4 and A6 as well as the A8 and their siblings. So all current Audi sedans have their roots in this small two stroke prototype built in the dark days before the 2nd World War:
(This is an IFA F9, built in east germany in the early 1950s, but the closest thing to the actual DKW F9 there is)

Then Quattro and engineering happened and all is right with the world.
Not to mention no one calls a Subaru front wheel drive and they have the same layout.

Not to mention no one calls a Subaru front wheel drive and they have the same layout.
That's because Subaru is heavily marketing itself on AWD cars and because they only offer FWD on their absolute base models and probably some JDM stuff that nobody cares about, therefore most non-car people probably don't even know that Subaru actually offers FWD. quattro™ on the other hand is merely an option on a lot of Audi models, it is available for most their range, however it is only mandatory equipment on the more powerful models. And the marketing seems less focused on quattro™.

"only offer fwd on their absolute base models"
Err here in the states that exactly what Audi does. Either way though you said they are FWD based cars & chassis, and likened them to the rest of VAG, which isn't true. So Quattro is derived from a fwd set up. That doesn't mean all of them now aren't engineered from the ground up for AWD.

Fucking everything these days is engineered from the ground up for AWD. You can get pretty much anything with AWD. A Porsche 911 is engineered from the ground up for AWD. A BMW 3/5/7 series is engineered from the ground up for AWD. A Mercedes XYZ-Class is engineered from the ground up for AWD. A Ford Transit is engineered from the ground up for AWD. If it can be had with AWD, you can bet that in most cases it was engineered to be that way from the beginning. That shit is not a unique trait of Audi anymore.

Then y u do this? "based on an FWD Platform -.-" & act like Subaru be AWD and Audi be FWD ?????
MultiplaOrgasms
> Milky
09/03/2014 at 14:25 | 0 |
Ok. Let's see. Audi puts a great emphasis on making all their cars available with quattro™, right? Therefore they develop their cars to incorporate quattro™. But what about the FWD models then? Are these backwards engineered AWDs with the centerdiff, driveshaft etc. removed? Do they start development with the AWD, and then look what they can remove to make it FWD? I don't think so. I think they start with the FWD base models to get them out of the way and then focus on AWD for the rest of the development phase. Likely same with Subaru. Everyone else probably focuses on 2WD first, and then adds the AWD credentials. Does that sound plausible to you?

Audi engineers: A highly secret group of people operating in the underground of Ingolstadt, and controlling the world car market and car buyers via mind control devices not visibly placed somewhere inside their cars. Anyone who acquired knowledge about these people vanished within days...
