"HammerheadFistpunch" (hammerheadfistpunch)

So here is the deal: Search in Oppo sucks. Truth is you would have better luck putting your search terms in google and looking for the oppositelock link. This means finding that one post you saw the other day, or similar topics, or images is pretty difficult to do, even if it was your post. The good news is there IS a way to organize our information in a the form of tags. What are Tags? !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
Now that you have a handle on the use, and logic of tags the next logical step is to create a directory for commonly used tags so that we have a record that is usable. Since I clearly don't have access to all the tags that people use I am using the tag system to have you guys help me create and maintain the directory and this is how you do it:
Step 1. when you post something using a tag that you like (Miatapanties, shameOhio, FordsWithFords, etc...no im just kidding, please only give me USEFUL AND FREQUENTLY USED tags) then simply include the "TAG" tag along with it. make sure to separate tags with a comma.
Step 2. I will crawl the TAG entries and add to the directly the best ones to this document, and dump the ones that don't have merit, then I will edit your post and remove the "TAG" tag.
Then all you have to do is type !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! where you will (hopefully) see just this one post and voila, you've got access to a directory of tags!
Now these aren't hot links, too much can change in Kinja and its too time consuming to link them all, so for now they are just a reference, see something you like? Add "/tag/whatever" to the end of oppositelock.jalopnik.com (e.g. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! )
RULES:
1. The "TAG" tag is on a list of sacred tags labeled "administrative and reserved" misuse these tags and we re-edit the tag to be "wall of infinite shame", or the like.
2. Do it again and we delete the post
3. Keep doing it and face the standard Administrative punishments.
4. Again, I don't want to add "MyBrownManualMiataMithLsConversion" as a tag, this is a directory that's means to be an aid, not a running joke.
5. DON'T!!! add your tag suggestions as a comment in this post.
Administrative and reserved.

To other people, the tag "emma" is mine (I'm so selfish). As much as I love emma watson gifs... yeah those don't apply to my thread.

So, are you saying that we have to put the tag "TAG" into all of the tagged posts that we make? The way you've written this isn't very clear.

I'm a little confused. We create a new post with the tag "tag" and list all of the tags we use in the post or as tags?
HammerheadFistpunch
> jkm7680
09/05/2014 at 16:55 | 0 |
no, only for suggestions on tags you want added to the directory. So you would think, hmm, I sure use FERRARIFIRE a lot, you would create a post and say, "hey yo, Add FerrariFIRE to the list" and tag it "TAG" then it ends up where I can see and sort it. It's more complected that just commenting but cleaner and keeps the idea fresh in peoples minds.

yes. thats the jist of it. This way it helps me sort what I have or haven't added and why, and by posting the actual post on oppo it reminds people that the "TAG" tag exists as a way to combate the problem of it not being used on account of people not remembering.

Gotcha, but if it's a personal tag that only I use can I keep using it without it being "approved?"

I was actually meaning to ask, is there any way to look at just posts you published to oppo, or are you always stuck searching through all of your comments and whatnot too?
HammerheadFistpunch
> jkm7680
09/05/2014 at 17:04 | 0 |
oh this isn't to tell you what tags you can and cant use, the "approval" is only if its worth making it to the directory for easy reference. I have some personal tags on there "TWBV" (The World By Vehicle) and "BDCT" (Best Damn Comment in Town) because they are series or commonly used to the point that there is a backlog of good content under those tags.

sadly, any method that I know, you know. Kinja aint great for organization. If you tag your posts consistently, then it helps.

As Hammerhead hinted at, the Gawker search function sucks worse than a three dollar hooker. I have had great success searching for old posts using Google. Type: "Oppositelock [your screen name] [keyword from post]". It works about 95% of the time.

Also, would be better with mundane word + 'lopnik' on the end.
Example: #Worklopnik #Lovelopnik #IceCreamlopnik
But that would require Kinja to support regular expressions to fetch all those out :)

This thread is making an example of why I should have gotten a lot more sleep this weekend. I keep reading words, and I'm not sure if I'm understanding this correctly
So when I make posts about the HEMIWagon, I use the HEMIWagon tag in the tag box and I just type in "hemiwagon". I guess what's confusing me is the "TAG" tag. I'm totally lost as to what you're getting at there. Would I type in "TAG hemiwagon" to the tag box?
Would/could individual projects be included in this directory? I know there's an opponaut working on a Factory Five, and that should totally get a tag, then there's Bandit with Emma, I use HEMIWagon to keep my updates organized, etc. I think it would be cool if every opponaut kept some form of project log tag (if they have a current project), and we could have those included somewhere on the list, so we can walk down memory lane and see how some of them progressed, or just keep up on the latest "of happenings" (you missed that one!).
I'll just go ahead and bookmark this thread now, because a directory is awesome for Oppo.

hi, I'm new to oppo/kinja and was wondering why when I post a post it won't show up on the oppo fp
HammerheadFistpunch

09/08/2014 at 12:34 | 0 |
Yes, add ",TAG" to "Hemiwagon" in the tag field (you can add multiple tags if followed by a comma) and it will show up in when you type in oppositelock.jalopnik.com/tag/tag and then I will see it, add it to the list and then remove the "tag" tag that you added so that the directory is updated, but the post where you notified my isn't in the "tag" list anymore. I simplified it a little but I guess the language is still a bit goofy.

follow the steps my friend and I will take a look. just use them as you normally would and then include the "tag" tag as well and I will see what tag you want to add, and a way to see if its something we should include. The directory is what we make of it.

yes it works, no its not ideal. I'm not trying to replace google as much as i am attempting to help people use the tools we have to organize their own stuff in such a way that its easily cataloged.

ok, I've been using the tag "Stupid_Denver" for my digital art and the tag "Denver_Draws" for my drawings for a few months now. I'll just keep using them as I am then

Yeah, more organized would be nice, but I don't find using the site specific google stuff as being cumbersome. Honestly my biggest beef with Kinja is not having a good way to contact a user that I've found, every now and then I'd like to exchange some information with a specific person without making a post and showing everyone.

PM's, and stickies are on the mods wish list.

I could see stickies being interesting to implement, unless it was in sidebar form(which would actually be a better use of space than the recommended stories in my opinion) and PM's would definitely make things a lot easier.
In the past I've met up with a few people on here and we always had to exchange contact information in the comments and while the community is pretty upstanding it's still a bit strange to do at times.

Funny, I was thinking about this issue over the weekend. Not about the 'TAG-adding as a tag'-part (which is a great idea) but more like this:
I wanted to create an overview of all the opponauts doing there project-cars/bikes. If all opponauts create one page with something like the tag 'oppoprojects' in which they post a summary and a link to their 'clicked-on tag' (like mine: I always post updates regarding my project with the tag ' BMW 2002tii touring ') you not only create directories but also sub-directories!
Regarding your proposal, I should create one post about this with the tag 'TAG' to get it listed and then you've got a directory nesting 2 sub-levels. Right?

I can't reply to your oppo post (language filter at work) so I will say here that im glad it wasn't someone dicking with you and that it was a mistake, and they I happened to be looking at the time. If you don't mind adding a "tech support" tag to your post in oppo and maybe fixing the language issue we can talk about flagging a little.
