Kinja'd!!!

Since image comments came back, blog related stress has totally gone out the window.

It entertains me to think that we are transcending in some cases the different tribal dialects we as humans have used forever (the same ones that keep people separate) in favour of something universal and pictorial—something universally understood like memes.

And what really entertains me is that before written and spoken dialects created the divisions in our prehistoric ancestors, we had these:

Kinja'd!!!

So in effect, our earliest ancestors used pictorials to communicate ideas in a way that didn't need stratified languages, and now, here in the present, users of the world's largest cave (the internet) have begun to come full circle back to common visual languages like memes. Digital cave paintings.

When we lost that here, all hell didn't break loose, but it was almost a war. Because we had to talk with words without the augmentative bridge of broadly understood memes and photos that we had grown accustomed to using. Lots of strife going backward like that.

Which makes you think... How far will common visual languages like memes augment our spoken words in the centuries and millennia to come? And how important and formative will it be in transcending into something more homogenous in terms of global communication? It's not so far fetched. Especially considering that we have exponentially accelerated our world into more of a visually rich experience with our smart phones and the way UI design has gone since the days of DOS. Object oriented people. A curious thought.

I do wonder if thousands of years from now, historians will data mine the beginnings of this and say "there, right there, cheezburger, that was the genesis of how we became monocultural and resolved a lot of issues."

If you are high as fuck right now, I'm sorry, but please enjoy the futurist philosophy hole I have just laid out.

Communication is going in the direction that money has gone in. Memes don't just exist as picture, they're also memetic ideas and viral concepts that drive people's decisions.

At first, stock trading was about speculation and survival needs. It was risky and done only to help further yourself. As methods got more complex, it became a reliable way of spreading ideas. Unlike language, the economy just has much fewer methods of communication, though there are equally complex depths to be found in them. So it's a little easier, and more obvious of what happens when you make that system so efficient it becomes absolutely mechanical.

If you haven't read 1984, do it, particularly the sections about the reduction of the size of the Newspeak dictionary.

There might be a trendline towards a single culture/organizational identity representing all of Earth. But there is also a lot of tribalistic issues standing in the way. We're going to have to give up 'the other' if we want a global community, and that's not going to go away without a shitload of bloodshed, conflict, and devastation. Remember that 50 million people had to die, and the saftey and security of the entire biosphere had to be threatened to bring us to this relative point of stability we enjoy today. Bigger gains forward will require a bigger sacrifice, and the tribalistic othering nature of humanity could easily make it a step backward instead, making the sacrifices needed to take us there all in vain.

I miss talking in ".jpg".

I felt like we were developing a new language, like we were a part of something great. It actually inspired me to study linguistics because I realized that language can be anything, really. Any form of communication. Theoretically, a society could thrive by talking in ".jpg". Businesses could be run on ".jpg". I just made that crap up; it's all a lie.

What you're saying kind of scares me. Surely you're not implying that it would benefit humanity if so called "underdeveloped cultures" were to be wiped out? Surely you're not implying that our myriad of cultures and nations should be dozed over and assimilated into a single entity?

It might scare me less if you define these things more tangibly:

- "Tribalism"

- "Sacrifices"

- "Bigger gains forward"

I found it interesting during that whole period how people would reply with just a description of a known meme/image.

Tribalism =/= underdeveloped. Democrats vs. Republicans, Rich vs. Poor, Capitalism vs. Socialism, these are all forms of tribalism.

I've always considered memes to be more than just some picture with whatever meaning many people have agreed on applied to it. I think that memes are more like 'snapshots' of our culture at a certain point in time, and in fact aren't just limited to pictures. They can be as simple as abstract ideas with no illustrations save for what we give them.

Of course, MGS2 is entirely at fault as to what I think memes are.
