I've been emotional all week

I'm one of the more senior Opponauts, as many of you know. Old enough that my first-born (and only son) started University this year. We drove him/his stuff up to Berkeley last weekend to get him settled into his dorm. I did fine the whole time we were there. Then we left to drive back home on Monday late afternoon.

Oh, the fucking waterworks.

I'm usually not such a Sally. With the exception of suffering animals (FUCK YOU, SARA MCLAUGHLIN COMMERCIAL), I can deal with almost anything. This was really, really hard.

Not quite there yet, my oldest will be 16 in November. But... it's coming. Congrats to you and him for getting him to this stage where he is setting out on the right path and on his own.

Well, as a recent graduate, all I can say is that I'm sure he appreciates you as a father.

My dad was all like "peace the fuck out, yo."

My oldest stayed at home during her college days. If I had sent her to a far away place, I might have had the same emotions. Lucky for me. It is a passage for both you and he. Fate is what it is and you must make the most of it. Stay in touch to keep that fatherly advice there. He will probably want it's reassuring sound. He will be fine.

Intellectually I realize all of that. I just need to exorcise the emotional old woman who has taken up residence in the Limbic system of my brain.

You do need to allow the emotions an escape. It is good for you. That "old woman" is there for a reason. "She" also controls the formation of memories to an extent. The best part of life is ahead for you and he.

Congratulations. Yeah, the drive home from dropping my daughter off at school was surreal. She graduated two years ago and I have to say that watching her fledge as a young adult is very fun.

Being an empty nester has it's merits too.

This may sound cliché but it is the God's honest truth: enjoy the time you have with him and savor it completely because it passes faster than you can imagine.

I believe you. My daughter is almost 2, but I swear she was born a few weeks ago. I can honestly say that I am cherishing it.

Crying is only acceptable at Funerals and the Grand Canyon.

Though, those damn McLaughlin ads catch me off guard on occasion too.
