I haven't been on much these last two weeks, mostly because they were some crazy two weeks. Song is somewhat appropriate, by the way.

Anyways, I'm interning at the pediatric wing at school right now and, if you know a thing or two about third world countries, you know that the things that most keep kids at the hospital are nasty malformations, terrible, terrible terminal diseases, crippling or disfiguring accidents and dysmal lack of parental care. As luck would have it, the team I'm interning with has multiple counts of all of the above right now, and it's some gut wrenching stuff to see kids who haven't even started living yet in those states. I'm not going to discuss any specifics, obviously, just wanted to let my Oppo bros know that I'm still alive hahaha...
Oh yeah, I also picked up some card magic in the meantime. Even the most simple tricks cheer up the little ones, even if for a short while.

Good to hear you are learning magic! some of my friends know it, and it mind fucks me to no end! :)
a lot of new stuff has happened BTW. VincentVancabrio, BugEyedBeetle and I all got new VW in the past 2 weeks! (Mk7 VW golf, Beetle R-line, and Jetta GLI, respectively) A lot of people here int he US are staring school/college up again, so that's fun... so yeah, business as usual! also, pictures in comments are back!
Also, how's the Siedicivalvole (misspelled that so bad...) holding up man?

Are you planning on going into pediatric medicine. If you are, do you want to specialize in anything?

Ah, so that's where the scent of new cars is coming from, congrats! The Tipo is business as usual as well, I still need a few spare parts here and there, but it's been a good while since I had any issues with it. It's turned out to be a surprisingly reliable daily driver and partner in crime after all hahaha...

I'm still planning on going for some sort of surgical specialization, but I'm really enjoying my time in the pediatrics unit. It's a bit sad to see these cases everyday, but the teams are great, they're careful and friendly people, which is probably why they got into pediatrics in the first place, but that also makes working with them a blast.

I was chronically ill as a child, Still am (chronically ill, not a child lol). If I were to give you some advice from the patient's perspective, would you want it?

Working with children can really put a strain on everything as you see these children who haven't really started to really live their life yet go through such awful stuff but you've got to be strong, show them it's okay and try to be there for them. After a few years I had to step back as it really took it's toll on me. Empathy and humour work hand in hand together. Kids love to laugh so any day you can help one child laugh, then your doing great.
Stick in there as it's a very rewarding area of medicine but can also be the hardest to cope with.

Yup, I'd love to. It's really hard sometimes to connect with their fear and worries, specially when it isn't nothing really serious, and know what to tell them to keep them at ease.

Treat them like your equal, It was always important to me that my doctors leveled the playing field. Also dont be afraid to take a personal interest, I have my GI doc's cell phone number and My endocrinologist came to my Bar Mitzvah. Its just the little things to show you care, that are important. Oh and jokes, lots of jokes.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll keep that in mind. I actually enjoy going the extra mile to ensure the patients are comfortable or have someone to talk to when they need it. Had a nice chance to do that today, a little girl was waiting to be discharged this morning while some procedures were performed on her roomate, one of our most severe cases and she was scared witless of the machines and noises they made, so me and a colleague distracted her with some simple card tricks until it was over. She thought my deck was enchanted and asked to keep it, so I gave it to her and she played around with it until her mother and her were released.
