Oppo, great news! I'm getting another car – but first, some backstory.

I've been thinking recently about what type of car I'd like to buy far, far down the road when my current car (1993 BMW 320i) bites the dust. I think a nice little roadster would be nice (possibly the Fiata).

Yesterday, while having dinner with my family, my father asked if I would like an MG Midget.

Of course I want a Midget, dad.

So he went on to tell me how his friend has a 1972 Midget he wants to get rid of. He inherited the car and has no interest in driving it, so it's been sitting for a few years (in a garage!). At this point, I started to clue in that my father wasn't joking about this – I would have the chance to pick up a fairly cheap roadster. With my interest solidly piqued, I asked what sort of price he was selling it for since I have some disposable cash lying around.

Free. He's giving away this car, and all I had to do was claim it.

Unfortunately, I leave for university on Saturday, so I won't have the chance to drive or see the car before then. We won't have space in our garage this winter (since my E36 is a summer car only), but fortunately the guy is happy enough to hold on to it until summer.

I don't know much about the car other than that the original engine, which produced a furious 54.5 horsepower, was replaced 3000km ago. The body has some rust, but isn't junk as far as I know. The top needs replacing. I don't know what colour it is, but I'm very much hoping for british racing green. If the rust happens to be bad enough to warrant a repaint, I'll be going with green and white racing stripes.

Without further ado, here is a picture of something that might look like this car, but much nicer!

Side note, totally getting a luggage rack.

Nice! I've always liked the Midget.

Sure, a Miata might be a more reliable and practical option, but British roadsters of that era have a distinct charm of their own. I've got a rough-but-driveable MGA (given to me by my father-in-law after I resurrected it after having sat in a shed for 30 years), and it puts a big stupid grin on my face whenever I get in it, even if I don't actually drive it anywhere.

Keep us posted, and feel free to ask advice! I'm not too familiar with the specifics of the Midget powertrain, but it's broadly similar to the MGA, and most of the tricky bits (Lucas electrics, SU carburettors, etc.) are all the same, and really not that bad once you get your head around them.

P.S. I like your username. I was brought up around old Triumphs and Jaguars, so that firing order is permanently ingrained upon my psyche.

If you don't want it, I'll take it. No, I'm not kidding.

Seriously. Who doesn't want their own midget. You get to dress them up in people clothes and watch them struggle to get food off the bottom sh... oh! you were talking about the car... Well obviously. The MG is awesome.
