Regarding places we tend to think of expedition travel, South Africa is probably high on anyone's list. In this day and age, however, we tend to think of it as all said and done and while its mostly true that the cartography is taken care of, the exploration is always new and fresh. Noted overlander Andrew St.Pierre White is in South Africa in the makadikadi (made famous by Top Gear) in his recently released episode 1 of his Show 4wheel drive on youtube. In the 24 minutes long episode they talk gear, techniques and fuel and share their stunning views of this amazing place. Seeing this gives me the wants because here in the US, even the remote west, the truth is that there is a lot of civilization everywhere and the idea of having the ability to really remove yourself from the world and live comfortable is the essence of the romance of this type of travel.

I have a relative with a heavy loaded fzj80 supercharged with lights, winch the works...he had to make a special bracket to relocate his plate because he was overheating...its very sensative stuff.

living in Colorado there are tons of off road rigs, and I often wonder if there is value in unbolting all the extra stuff (shovels, winches, high lift jacks) for their daily commute. Skinny tires too. But then you dont look good, and thats valid. Just a thought I have often.
I have a ski rack, and I only put it on when I need it because I saw a ~4mpg drop in fuel economy when daily driving with it

I typically unbolt everything I don't need. the "look" is of only minor importance to me. Thats not saying I dont really want everything ARB makes...but there HAS to be a point to it and i have to be able to justify it. I leave my awning on full time, but only because it makes zero difference in mileage or noise.

I suspect, the look is very important to a lot of the lifted vehicles about town, mostly because most of them never see dirt :(
