Apparently people outside of the US of A don't think it's as well known as a 2cv to which we MURICAns reply that nobody besides us knows what a 2cv is. The thing I think they fail to realize is in other parts of the world there are lots of people who don't know what any car model is. In America we haven't embraced public transit or motorcycles for primary transportation the same way other cultures have. Everyone in America knows at least a couple cars and one of those cars is always Mustang.

Oh, I'd say that the Fiat 500 is more famous in Italy, the 2CV in France, the Beetle far more ubiquitous in Germany, Mini in Britain, etc. even if they don't know the name they point at it and go "Oh yeah, that thing. I've seen it before."

But world-wide ?

It's hard enough to say that the 'best known' car is one that doesn't exist in the world's largest driving country (Beetle exempted, most people know what that is) but the Mustang is known about outside of the US because of appearing in so many films, advertisements, news, etc. over the years.

Being #1 in the US and #20 everywhere else is a lot more important than being #1 in France, #1000 in the us, and #20 everywhere else.

In America, it's a tough competition, but outside of the US I imagine the Mustang is way more recognized than the Corvette. The Corvette wasn't really marketed out of the US until the C6 gen I think, maybe a bit with the C3.

I definitely recognize the Beetle as the most likely opponent to try and steal the Mustangs crown as the most recognizable but the problem with the Beetle is it has been marketed with different names in different regions including being known by nicknames in places. For example a large portion of Americans might have no idea what a VW Beetle is but they know what a VW Bug is.

I consider VW Bug and Beetle to be the same thing. Likewise, I would remove names entirely from it. If they can recognize the shape of the car, that should be enough. Doesn't mean they have to memorize the name, which is what I think some people are confused with too. As we don't call it a "Type 1" either.

The problem with that is I think there are more people in America who know the Mustang name then there are who actually know what the car looks like. I could be wrong though.

Neither, it's the VW Beetle, though I'd put the Mustang in 2nd place. Everybody in the damned world knows what a Beetle is, even if they've never ridden in a car. There are Mustang enthusiasts on both sides of The Pond, though I'll admit that this isn't any sort of scientific measurement. I honestly doubt that anyone over here even knows that the French even make cars. I sure as hell didn't until a few years ago and my first thought was "That's a horrible idea. Who the hell let them do that?" And I just don't get why Brits love that bag of rags so much but hate the Beetle. They'll go on for hours about all of the horrible traits of the Beetle. Then they'll go on for even more hours about how much they love those same horrible traits that have been cranked up to 11 in the 2CV.

I would put the jeep (wrangler) over the corvette. People saw them in war movies for decades. They stand out when coming down the road.

I think you're right but I think enough people know what a beetle is to make it #1 regardless.
