I spend a lot of time in Northern Michigan and every time I pass by this building, I see the front ends of these two cars. The location is a tricky piece of roadway so I never got a very good look. Last time I passed through I made a point to get out of the car with my big lens and snap some pics. Again, I know nothing of these cars other than what you see here. And I'm a Mopar guy, so I know even less than what you see here. WYSIWYG. Enjoy.

Kinja'd!!!

The cars have been there for quite a few years (and check out the cool gas pump).

Local landmark. (The building with the cars is to my left as I took this).

nice one. Weird bumper overriders though. Needs the split bumper.

I showed these pics to some people before who commented on the oddity of the bumper. With the limited information from these pics, who knows?

Yeah, most Camaros don't have the bumper over the grill.

I've seen a few just now (Google) but the two smaller uprights are odd.

72 or 73 camaro.

Those bumpers may look "funny" but they are a rare option- RPO VF3.

Here's an example of pricing on a refurb rear bumper.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-71-72…

VF3 rubber strips command big $ in the resto market.

Awesome picture of the bridge! Here's my cellphone backdrop. You may recognize it.

Ah yes, The Calumet & Hecla "Gift" to the fine people of Lake Linden. I have a TON of pics of the Copper Country. My family is from up there and I've written some books on the local history.

Made a mistake. Too early in the AM. VF3 is something different (strips along the main bumper) and I botched it up.

The bumpers on this car would be correct for a '73 Z/28 standard equipment.

I miss being up at Michigan Tech, I've got some train pictures from up there I'll probably post to the railyard later this week

I might have to check them out. I went to Michigan Tech and Houghton and the Keweenaw is kind of a home away from home to me.

I wrote "Death's Door" about the Italian Hall disaster. I'm sure you heard of that (cry of Fire! resulting in 73 dead). I was also in the PBS documentary "Red Metal" which came out last DEC about it (that was the 100th anniversary of the event).

Scrolling through and see the pic on Oppo. I think, "man that looks familiar". See's the closeups, "seriously, I've seen this building before". Sees the bridge, "HEY, THAT'S DAVE'S".

If you've crossed that bridge, you've seen it. Any idea on the story behind the cars? Seems like they've been there forever.

No idea about the cars. I've never heard of anybody who knows anything about them or how they got there or who owns them.

I'm always tempted to stop in and ask but you know how friendly the locals are to "tourists" from downstate who stop in to ask nosy questions.

It's a '72-'73 Z28 - egg crate grille was finer (smaller holes) on the '70 and '71 cars.

Agreed, usually the bumperettes indicate a 73 model.

I immediately recognized the bridge in Houghton. here's some pix from my trip there a few years back.

I wish I knew how to embed pictures. I figured it out a couple weeks ago, then I went gray and I've not yet come back.

Image URLs will show up as pix. Just paste 'em in & they automatically load. (On a PC, right-click an image, copy the link or copy the URL - options depend on your browser - then paste that into the message. A site URL won't work, you'll need to use something that ends in .jpg or other image format suffix.)

Kinja'd!!!

You've got some great shots on that page!

I feel like at some point I used to be able to drag and drop an image and it would appear. maybe? well, I'm sure I'll figure it out.

how do I apply for non-gray status? I realize I'm not *that* interesting but if Gawker is hoping to allow only ~10% of posters to be pre-approved, I believe the quality of discourse will suffer as people who have interesting things to say (or, on Deadspin, clever dick jokes) will just not bother.

Regarding difficulties posting images, I blame Kinja (although I don't recall being able to drag & drop). The gray thing? It's a mystery & more than a bit of a fustercluck. Follow certain writers & ask to be approved, in an entertaining manner? Sacrifices to fickle gods? Teach someone how to drive stick? Good luck.

is there a user's manual to Kinja?

I would, for example, like to know how to find my own comments to see if anyone has responded. I can find *one* per article by going to my .kinja.com subdomain, and then clicking on the comment to see if there is a reply.

heaven forbid I have multiple comments in an article — or if I want to be lazy and see a summary on the subdomain page as opposed to clicking on the individual article pages. (I think of it as "go fish".)

(I taught my wife to drive stick not too long ago, but before I started commenting on gawker. maybe I need to teach someone else??)

You should see notifications for replies or if someone starred a comment in the upper left corner of your screen - the two circles let you access your profile & your notifications; the right-hand one should display a number indicating recent activity on your comments.

Edit - No retroactive credit! Teaching the fine art of operating a manual transmission only counts once you've joined the commentariat ;-)

holy. living. fuck. FUCK.! !

so that's what "three bars in a circle" and "number in a circle" mean!? I had no idea.

I think it's just how my brain works that I don't instinctively "get" hieroglyphics. if there were a notifier that said "unviewed comment replies: 1" I'd have figured it out before it got to 158. but just a 158 in a circle - is that a speed limit? a banner ad that AdBlockPro didn't get? who knows? so I ignored it.

I've been there several times just because I happen to like driving around the country semi-aimlessly, but alas, I can't say I'm "familiar" with it apart from knowing where the old route markers are.

I will have to subscribe to your newsletter. err, check out your book.
