I'm taking a stand on this one: I see absolutely no sense in dumping tons of money in mods into a car worth absolutely nothing. You can paint like Picasso, put drawing on a trashcan will still make it ugly.
Just buy a car that's good to start with. Modding a Dodge Stratus is incredibly lame, and no amount of lame hashtags will save you from mediocrity.

I see tons of sends ;) if you like your car and don't want to bother with buying another one. I don't like the Stratus, but meh—to each their own.

Deciding what others should/should not be doing with their time, energy and money is a silly thing to take a stand on. You didn't have to help mod it or pay for the mods, right? In that case...so what?

I modified my civic (which made a whopping 80HP) back when I was in highschool. Black hood, shitty wheels, fart can exhaust/intake. I thought it was the greatest car ever. Because it was the greatest car ever. Because it was mine and because I worked on it. Fuck the haters.
It made no sense to modify it, but that's the thing with car culture. It doesn't need to make sense. If everything made sense, we'd all be driving Camrys.
But seriously, let the guy take pride in his car. He thinks it's cool, which is all that matters.

While I completely agree with your point regarding cars, If you were to take the above quote out of context and apply it solely to art, I would have to disagree. Anything done in an artistic manner is not trash, but it may still not be valuable. You cant completely discount art for reasons based solely on its medium

Full Coilover suspension is where the money went, along with wheels, exhaust, etc.
There's clearly enough money spent to start with a good car.
I've driven a Stratus before, they're just woeful to drive.

I don't want to be a dick and shit on your opinion but, if someone likes their car and wants to do stuff to it why judge them? Everyone has their own opinion on what is cool and what they like but as long as PS9 said as long as it is safe to be driven (hellamadflushstanceyo) and not an annoyance to other drivers (brotruckrollingcoaliamhidingbisexualtendenciesbrobrobrobro) people should be able to do what they want.

I don't see why it matters.
Not your car, not your time, not your problem.
It's cheaper to modify what you've got in increments then to buy something else and modify that.

I mean some people only have a "shitty" car. Some of these people also want to do some racing. If they want to race and this is their only car, then modding them does indeed make them better, and I think it makes them more badass! Particularly when they are super fast!

Yeah even the grassrootsmotorsports $20xx challenges are the very embodiment of this ideology. They take the oddest cars and hack them apart until they are something completely different all for under $20xx dollars. xx is the year of the event.

It's perfectly fine modding a shitty car, only if you can turn it into a non shitty car that no one cares that it is still based on a shitty car.
For example, if you buy a stratus, and turn it into a 500HP sleeper car, I don't care it started life as a stratus, it is clearly now something new and different. Same thing applies to buying shitty land yachts and turning them into rolling works of art. Or buying an SN-95 Mustang and giving it a twin turbo kit, or cobra IRS. In many ways, modifying a shitty car can be a way to get close to an awesome (but far more expensive) car that costs twice or three times as much, for less.
But dumping money on a car without really changing what it is, or making it any more exciting or valuable? That's stupid, and almost always happen because they are stuck with whatever shitty car their parents decided for them to drive and they are trying to make the most of it. It's not really bad to do and it is judgemental to say it's wrong, but it doesn't make much sense from a financial perspective.

Nuh uuhhh bro, you need to start of with a C7 or better and add some longtubes if you want real street cred. How dare you add some ok wheels to an ok looking normal person car. You're not allowed to be happy with things that make me unhappy. You can spend your time and money as I see to be fit and worthy, or you can GTFOutta here.

I'm going to add to the general consensus that if someone likes what they've done with their car then it's theirs and that's what counts. Is you your personal taste? Course not, and you're entitled to that opinion. But you can't shit on someone for making something their own.
Also:
Chrysler, v6, fwd, and who knows how much money I've thrown at it. But it's mine and I fucking love that car. Does everyone else? Nope. But are they driving it? Nope.
Also the stratus you pictured is done clean and actually looks like someone spent some time and effort to do a decent job. There's no mismatched unpainted body kit falling off, broken headlights but a thumping ass system, plus all the wheels even match. So props to that guy for making his ride his.

Sometimes you have to work with what you have. My parents would never let me own anything remotely "sporty" when I was growing up. They went as far as to take my own money and buy a car of their choice with it. I'll repeat that they took my OWN job earnings and bought a car THEY chose . So to get my feet wet, I raced and modified what I had. By the end, yes I could have gotten a miata or a GTI or pony car or something "sporty" and "good" but the parents said no.
So good to know you'd be a massive dickhead for shit I could do fuck all about. ANd better to know I could probably at least hang with you on an AutoX course if not beat you with my W-body shitbox.

This is what psises me off the most about this post - the work is well done. I made fun of a "modified" sebring in college that liked to do ricer street racer BS because it was a complete hackjob. The bodykit was obviously meant for another car, the "dual exhaust" was a "Y-pipe" only the cross was too far forward so it had to bend BACKWARDS to clear the second muffler. Anyone familiar with physics knows this ended up creating suction out of the second muffler. So by all means - shame the crappy job done. But this? That's a clean little car.

Yep. I just mentioned in another post about the time a ratty MkIV with half a billion spent on the engine did a ricer blowby after I dusted him trying to pass me on an onramp. Typical stuff for a cheapo budget build was apparent on the exterior - the front bumper was smashed, primer fenders that didn't fit right, I'm pretty sure the thing scraped when it turned........I mean, cool you probably do make 500hp out of the 1.8l turbo but you have to realize there's more to a car than just how big your turbo is......
And to some the car is already "tacky" if you look at his wheel choice or his base color choice or even the make/model/year he chose. But there's a quality to the work so I see no rason to not take pride in it.

Not liking something does not mean that particular something sucks; it just means you don't like it. Also, not liking something does not mean that others should not be allowed to like that something that you do not like. Just say "I don't like this" and move on.

Recently there was a post here that stated that modifying doesn't raise the cars value. I partly agree with this. Adding $10k of new parts to $5k car doesn't make it a $15k car and maybe not even $10k car. It might even still still be a $5k car.
But I don't see a car as an investment (collector cars are completely different thing). A car is a nearly bottomless money hole. And I don't see any reason why shitty car couldn't be a money hole. I think its good that "shitty" cars can have some love too. If all people would just modify the same models car scene would be boring and we would run out of Miatas.
BTW: The racing Stratus is awesome.

I'm modifying my $2,500 Audi A4. Why? Because I wanted the car, and I liked the car. You can tell me, "Oh, it's that nice of a car blah blah blah" and it isn't much, but it's mine and I can do whatever the hell I want to it.
You can still modify your car, and it doesn't HAVE to be a Miata, E46, Camaro or whatever. It can be a Stratus, or a Neon.
And some people can't afford anything "better."

I support the modding of ANY AND EVERYTHING. I don't hate on the starting platform. I hate on those that just throw parts at a car and make it stick (sometimes literally). Stick-on fender vents are not cool, they never were. A properly done HID projector retrofit is awesome, I support that.

Seriously? It's not your car, keep your opinions to yourself.
What if the owner of this car saw this? How would you like it if you were looking around on the internet and found a whole bunch of fellow gear heads slamming your car?
It's most likely a young kid who either bought what they could afford at the time, or maybe they were given mom/dad/grandma's old car so didn't have a say in what it was.
Now they have a "not ideal" car and they are doing what they can to make it theirs.

I like it.
The owner has the stance *perfect*, the wheels fit the car perfectly and the car looks really well taken care of.
Who knows.... the owner might have inherited it (nothing beats a free car) any time sometime obviously cares about their car and does a few tasteful mods......I'm gonna like it even if it isn't my cup of tea.

Well I think that's a shit way of looking at cars. If someone likes their car, and wants to make it a little more personal, then who gives a shit what their car is/how much it's worth.
It's not worth anything to anyone else, but it's worth something to them.
