Don't be entirely dismissive. Their music isn't great, but they still are a conduit for a lot of money and influence.

Basically, when people talk about 50 cent, they are not really talking about him as a person they're talking about the idea of him and the industry that has propped him up as a puppet. Both of which are quite scary things. It's like knowing that the CEO of a company is an idiot and a buffoon, but that company is still moving millions of dollars through an extremely clever and intricate marketing and sales plan, maybe even because the CEO is an idiot. Start looking at him not as a person, but as a mechanism for industry, and it starts making a lot more sense.

Some rappers, like Jay-Z and Kanye West, are actively involved in their industries so often times when you hear their accomplishments, it's generally ascribed to them or their influence. This is like a CEO that you know, without him, the entire company would fall apart in days.

Other rappers, like Eminem, are under the label head (Dr. Dre) so while they may be creative powerhouses (they, themselves are very skilled) it's the label head (the 'industry') that helps make them successful. This is like having a CEO who is very skilled, but would be absolutely nothing if it wasn't for his stockholder's board, who makes all of the non-creative, financial decisions for him.

I think there's an Aziz Ansari stand up bit about how 50 cent ordered a grapefruit juice and asked why it wasn't purple because he didn't know a grapefruit was different from a grape. They're both pretty dumb, and I kinda wish 50 wasn't as famous because I think he gives a bad name to rap. I love rap, but then people like 50 cent stick more in people's minds rather than actually talented rappers causing people like Satoshi to not give it a chance, which is understandable when you see idiots like 50 or Lil Wayne or see Nicki Minaj's music video thats almost porn.

Well, only one of them is a rapper (no W on rap, by the way). 50 Cent is a rapper, Mayweather is a boxer. And there actually is something rather special about both of them. While I don't particularly like 50, and never have, he certainly knows how to make music that will be popular (and by "he" I mean whoever makes his decisions for him), and Mayweather is an undefeated in his professional career, has won 10 world titles, and has been the fighter of the year a bunch of times. And they're both worth millions. I don't know what you definition of "nothing special" is, but they're both more noteworthy and "special" than I am.

I'd say roughly 60%-70% of all rap is stupid, but the 30% that isn't is actually pretty good. It's basically like what Rock and Roll was during the mid-70s right now. It's past it's "prime" (the late 60s) and most of the major Players (beatles) aren't making music anymore, but it's bigger than it's ever been, and we're seeing lots of unique talent and intricate experimentation going on.
