I am not going to join FSAE. I want to join Electric FSAE. The electric team is smaller and is about to start their second year. Also, instant torque! I also think I am going to join the enthusiasts club. They hold a car show every year and do autox. Lastly I want to join the trap and skeet club because why not?

If the electric cars had the same aero as the combustion cars, they would actually be faster. The reason they don't right now is because wings have more weight and drag, so more batteries are required for the same range, which adds even more weight. Nobody has been brave enough to do this yet, so they are only slightly slower than the combustion cars.

Do you all have a Baja-SAE group? One of our new hires did Baja and Formula, loved both, but liked Baja more.

Formula Electric (I know that's not what it's called, but IDGAF) is the way of the future. Plus, you know, torque vectoring. Badass.

I gotta join a few clubs too. PAPA is a good one, I always show up to their autocross, drag race, and car shows. They have no idea who I am but I go anyway.

As for FSAE. . . either one works for me. I just want to put things together. Suspension would be so much!!

Same. The EFASE guys don't even have a body shell yet. I love aerodynamics.

You should totally join electric FSAE, I actually machined all of the aluminum hub nuts for them last semester/into the summer. This year I'm returning for a masters in aero and am hopefully going to head up the aero team. I'll see if I can dig up a pick for some nice machining porn.

Aha, I have found the pics. The first is the hubs with the nuts in front, second is the nuts screwed on, and the third is an up close view of the nuts. Also, engineering protip: never, ever, ever, consider threads like this to be made in aluminum. Ever.

Just saw this...and the fact that you go to Purdue. I'm the President of the FSAE team. I don't comment on Jalopnik as much as I used to, but I digress. Any real reason why you're choosing electric over us? Just curious.

Oh really! Cool! Not really, I want to join the FSAE team but I fear I won't have enough time to make a impact on the team. I hear from a bunch of people on Oppo that being on the team is like working a real job (tons and tons of time). I just want to make sure I have enough time to get my studies done (Yay FYE). Nobody at the callout the other day could give me a real answer on the time commitment. Do you have an answer? I'd love to join the team but also want to make sure I could survive my classes.

Did you come by our table during the B-Involved Fair on Saturday? I shook hands and talked to so many people it's all a blur really.

As for the time commitment, you get what you put into it. You can spend as much or as little time on it as you'd like. At the end of the day, school comes first, but regular FYE is pretty light in terms of workload. To give you an idea, last year I was in the notorious FYE Honors program and still had time for Formula, Ross-Ade Brigade, and Paint Crew. A year later and I'm team president. There's no hard and fast number of hours. It's all about how you manage your time and what matters to you. I know that's a pretty crappy answer, but it's true.

I will say that one of the benefits of working on the Formula team instead of Electric is the fact that we've been racing since 1992. Our car actually passes tech and runs dynamic events each year. We're more organized. We have more resources. Put simply, if you're worried about time commitment, you'd be better off joining the team that's been doing this for years rather than the start-up.

I did go to the fair. That's actually a really good answer, much better than what I got. I lost the flyer, when's the call out? I'd like to come. I just don't want to be one face in a crowd of people, I'd love to contribute and be actually useful (I have the build skills haha).

September 4th @ 6pm in ME 2061.

There will probably be a ton of people at the callout, but if you follow up and actually start to show up to our workdays, people will take notice. You most certainly won't be a face in the crowd.

Also, not sure if there's a way to PM on Kinja (I was around for a long time, but kind of bailed after Kinja), but if there is, feel free to PM me if you want to talk about anything, FSAE or otherwise. Actually, if you want to send me an email at fsae@ecn.purdue.edu, you can do that and I'll send you my contact info.

Nope. No more PM on kinja, I'll shoot you an email. I do remember you from the pre Kinja days, you must have been young then, haha! You understand now that you are on my list of people to talk to if/when we do a purdue Oppo meet up (ysi, tyler, me, some others?)

I'm surprised people remember me at all. And yeah, I was a pretty frequent commenter in high school. Who are these other people you speak of?
