My wife's point and shoot is acting up. The lens has sand in it so it won't retract and extend as it should. This causes the camera to be useless. It has some Phillips screws holding the body of the camera together but they are too thin and shallow for anything I have to take them out. I've got some generic jeweler's screwdrivers and even the flat ones aren't doing the job.
I am aware that it is probably an exercise in futility and we should toss this camera and get another but I feel the need to attempt to fix it.
Anyone have an idea what I need and where I can get it?

What brand of camera?

This would probably get the job done ninety percent of the time.

Shared to Photography just in case somebody over there knows. One of the guys there is known for disassembling lenses, etc.
I have an old Canon CyberShot S5 IS that is (was) an excellent camera, but the lens motor crapped out. I would like to get it fixed, but doing so would probably cost twice as much as the camera is worth, or even more than I paid for it back in the day. The only upside to that camera crapping out is that I was able to talk my wife into letting me get a DSLR to replace it. I don't think she realized how much expense that road would lead to......

Kodak I think ... I'll have to hit Lowes up after work I'd happily pay $3.30 for that.

What's the make/model? I'd hate to recommend a tool kit and give you a sawz-all when you need an Xacto-knife

If it is a Kodak and it's not a high end model just junk it. Kodak's were pretty lousy from my experience. This is just my opinion though. If you like it keep it.

LOL. A small electronics set should do you well, but they vary in price and size range so much I'd like to give you something that includes what you need without tons of "unnecessary" extra bits

I get that. I got a Driving Force wheel at home that I believe had a bad potentiometer that I want to salvage. A Nikon is way more worth it than a Kodak though anyways.

Here, watch this.
Actually...it may not be very helpful since he's already got the lens out of the camera.

I took apart my moms Canon point and shoot about a year ago and it was a lesson in futility. There is so much packed into those little things. I took it apart and found a loose wire but could never get it back together the way it was meant. If you do, take tons and tons of pictures. And watch out for those flash modules, they stay powered up even if the batteries are taken out.

Looks to be PH00 heads - this kit is inexpensive and has pretty much what you'll need without getting too intricate.

If its junk anyway you can try for sure. If you didn't it would just be un-Oppoian

Really small Phillips screws were on the 55mm f/1.8 Super Tak I de-clicked and greased. Even an eyeglass screwdriver was too small. The solution was a bit dangerous (haha, bit), but I ended up finding the thinnest, sharpest, pointiest knife in the kitchen, then used the tip of that. It was like a serrated filet knife. Don't use one you love dearly, as the tip may break if you push it. Oh, and something about not cutting fingers off or something.

I'm sure he isn't. It's not like you took apart a perfectly good Pentax Super-Tak 55/1.8...
Though it's hard for me to mean to you about that. I took apart my Sigma 21-35 and now can't get it to go wider than 24mm... Whoops.

...and a 300mm f/4L IS (didn't tell you guys about that one cause I screwed up and forgot to take off the switch for IS first. Now I need a new IS Switch ribbon cable), and a 6D :)
Oh, and I had to take apart the Samyang 16mm f/2 for the Fuji because the aperture ring was stuck. Turns out the hole that the spring and ball bearing were sitting in was too small and the spring hopped out, then couldn't compress back in, jamming the aperture.
Props for taking apart a zoom lens, I don't think I'd even try that. Oh, and for the record, manual focus lenses are a LOT easier

Well, I mostly only used the 35mm end of the Sigma (and it's the older MF version).
Congrats on the Samyang fix! I'm usually pretty good with small electronics and such, but didn't have too much luck with the Sigma or my Vivitar.
The Vivitar just had too many tiny screws that I didn't have the proper tools to remove, but it died thanks to fungus, so at least I got a nice paperweight and coaster out of it.
