Wow, also fuck the ALS challenge. 500K people die a year from heart disease.

I used to think like this until I realized that ALS people are in far more of a "situation" than heart disease sufferers.
Not just because their disease is nasty but because the incidence rate is so low that it doesn't make financial sense for anyone to work on a modern treatment let alone a cure.
This is a case of "we would go bankrupt trying to help you since we'd never recover R&D costs". In some cases the government will subsidize R&D but not always.
That sucks, and this may be a great thing for them as far as funding goes. Granted most people didn't pay, but it's still a massively record setting year for donations.

I know it's a serious disease, I just want to point out that heart disease, cancer and diabetes are far more dangerous when it comes to survival.

There is awareness, funding, treatment, and research going on for all of those diseases already. ALS patients don't have much at all. Ask a Joe of the street what ALS does as a disease.
Not trying to start shit, just trying to offer a perspective not usually given.

I know how bad it is, as a disease. But, 2/100K is such a low rate of the population that I can't understand the coverage.

Oh, why the challenge is popular? Probably due to narcissism. Most of the ice bucketers did not donate and probably don't know anything else about ALS.
