I found a Subaru Royale on Kijiji and one photo shows the spare tire under the hood. What other cars do this?

Technically, many rear-engined cars keep the spare under the hood, if we're referencing the hood as the front opening in the car :)

Okay my complete smart-ass comment aside, some Renaults did it as well. Perhaps it's a french thing.

I always liked the El Camino keeping the spare behind the passenger seat. That just reeks of the design finishing and someone going

'oh shit, we forgot the spare'

then someone else

'fuck it, throw it behind the seat'

Seems like it is a french thing. They need more room in the trunk for baguettes and wine

Subaru used to do that on many of their cars. Some older Fiats and had those too. Lada Niva had its spare tire in the engine bay at one point. I'm sure there are plenty more examples.

Didn't old Subarus and VeeDubs use the air pressure in the spare to squirt windshield washer fluids, BTW?

Loyale, we had one when I was a kid. It was Subaru's entry-level FWD model at the time.

I remember my dad poking fun at the spare tire under the hood, which combined with the paper-thin doors and slightly rattly engine note led him to declare the car a Japanese tin can. However, he had no choice at that point - the last three American cars in a row had been total junk and it was time to take the plunge.

As it happened, that Japanese tin can gave 12 years of totally problem free service and was still in perfect shape when traded in.
